The Florida teacher who was beaten unconscious by a 270-pound student in a viral video has refused to help the teen’s defense lighten his sentence, according to a report.
Brendan Depa, then 17, violently hurled Matanzas High School paraprofessional Joan Naydich to the ground, then could be seen in the video kicking and punching her in the back and head more than a dozen times before he was pulled off her by other staff.
The troubled teen told investigators he attacked Naydich because teachers ordered him to stop playing a video game on a Nintendo Switch.
Depa, who was charged as an adult, faces up to 30 years in prison for the first-degree felony charge of aggravated battery.
According to Flagler Live, Naydich has “shown no interest in mitigating what penalties Depa might face.”
The autistic teen — who will plead guilty to avoid trial — was initially charged as a juvenile in the case before the raps were upgraded.

Why should the sentence be lighted? This guy is a danger to society. This is what he did with his bare hands. What happens when he gets introduced to weapons?

I think a chair across the back of his skull would have been appropriate, but that would have spelled the end to that persons career as a teacher or aid. Schools do not back staff, especially if it’s a “person of color”.

Yep. I taught for decades in an urban public high school. During one of our staff meetings, a lawyer from the school board came to talk to us.
He told us point-blank: If you get into a fight with a student, you are own your own legally. Expect no help from us.

The ‘troubled teen’ is described as autistic. That means he has an I.E.P. (Individualized Education Program) which means the school has to educate him in the least restrictive environment possible—the school is required to have him with the normals as much as possible.
The school cannot discipline him without having to jump through legally binding hoops to such an extent that lots of schools don’t even bother to discipline them. His education comes first, if necessary at the expense of the ‘normals’.

He has a history of this, even while in jail A MONTH AGO! Lock him up and throw the keys away!

As I noted in another post, I taught at an urban public high school. And I’ll field that question.
Very often, the bleeding hearts in administration will try to sweeten the pot. Here’s what I mean. A colleague of mine was attacked by a student, although not nearly as bad as what happened here.
“Agree to reduce the charges,” said the superintendent, “and we’ll let you transfer to the school of your choice. Plus, we won’t deduct the days you’re off recovering from your sick day total.”
My colleague was just beginning her career, and she was teaching at a totally sh!t school. She took the deal, and transferred to one of the few sane schools in the district.
