Joel Simonds, a Los Angeles-based rabbi involved in progressive causes, has always known that many of his ideological allies did not agree with him on Israel.
But after this weekend’s terror attack, the worst killing of Jews since the Holocaust, Simonds said many liberal Jews feel abandoned by people they thought were friends, some of whom have expressed little sympathy for the Israelis killed while focusing instead on the plight of Palestinians.
“In these last few days, the silence is deafening and it is hurtful and a betrayal on so many levels,” said Simonds, the founding director of the Jewish Center for Justice and president of Partnership for Growth Los Angeles, an interfaith partnership with Black churches.
American Jews, who are overwhelmingly liberal, have often supported social justice movements. Simonds said while most progressive leaders have offered support, he feels betrayed by others on the left who have not.
“It’s not going to change the way we look at justice,” Simonds said. “It’s going to change the way we look at our allies.”
Israel has been so fraught in some progressive circles that many preferred not to talk about it, enforcing a sort of strategic silence to avoid dividing the movement and distracting it from common ground issues.
That long-stifled debate is now spilling into public view in heated and sometimes ugly ways, dividing Democrats and exposing what some say is antisemitism that has been allowed to fester on the left for years.
“There needs to be some soul searching about the extent of antisemitism within these groups such that these organizations are blinded to the worst form of terrorism,” said Rep. Shri Thanedar, D- Mich., who renounced his membership in Democratic Socialists of America on Wednesday after several of the group’s chapter seemed to applaud Hamas’ attack.

Antifa silence is deafening.
Right you are. It’s just another bald-faced lie designed for public consumption to accomplish exactly what the author is highlighting.
The left is a collective of anti-semites tolerated by the minority of them that is not, for the sake of party unity.
They’re all FOS, each and every one.
The bias of liberal Jews against Republicans and conservatives has always bothered and baffled me.
I’ll support Israel because it’s the right thing to do. I don’t care if the Jews in the U.S. are liberal and they tend to vote 90% for the Democratic Party. But for their sake, hopefully they are giving their party a second look, especially since they are tolerating antisemites.
Willful blindness.
I hear you, but everything on the left was, more or less, an outcome of the Jewish belief system and its effect is to tear down and destroy the Christian West. Whether it was done with hostility in mind or just wanting to promote a better world under Judaism is another question.
I found an interesting paper that makes this point.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5942340/
I’ve read Kevin MacDonalds books and they are laughable. A relatively recent leftist ideology that is limited to specific groups of Jews and leads to negative population growth through intermarriage and low reproductive rates is the opposite of a group evolutionary strategy. MacDonald knows nothing of Judaism, Jewish history, Jewish groups, of intergroup dynamics between Jewish groups. And his theory is self-negating garbage.
You are welcome to explain why socialism was mostly a Jewish endeavour and its effect to end the West.
I do differentiate between Torah observant Jews and truly secular ones and the destroyers. But what is destroying the world right now had its origins amongst the unbelieving Jews who wanted the blessings of the Torah, but not responsibility to YHWH. Socialism without morality is destroying the world and bringing on the end of the world as we speak.
I’ve always said the democrat party is just a collection of disparate hate groups. Once they feel we are marginalized, they will go after each other. They need something or someone to hate, it’s their manna.
Unfortunately it is a Jewish endeavour. The core all the socialism movements were Jewish leaders. This is true in China and it was true in Russia.

As I said, I have absolutely no problem with Torah observant Jews or the truly secular ones. I also understand that the number of Jews that pushed worldwide socialism were relatively small in number. I’m not a believer in the Jewish conspiracy to take over the world. I’m just noting that the introduction to socialism world wide were done by those of Jewish descent.
I don’t know what it means, other than they were people who wanted the blessings of God, but they rejected God. That’s a prophetic fulfillment of I Time 3:5, imo.
“Once they feel we are marginalized, they will go after each other.”
That ain’t the half of it. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Wait till the seemingly Perpetual Magic Money Tree no longer bears fruit. Then it will get very, very “interesting”.
Did you read the Tablet Article? Jews in Russia didn't back the Bolshevik takeover. They opposed teh White Russian antisemites, who were killing Jews. One group lets you live, while suppressing your religion and culture. The other kills you, while suppressing your culture and religion. Who do you pick? It's not a choice and you know it.
The fact is that the Russian people chose land, bread, peace, and communism.
I did say it was small in number.
I don’t view the position as being anti-semitic, as I explained to you that the number was small.
