Egypt intelligence official says Israel ignored warnings of ‘something big’

Amid mounting questions about Israel’s failure to anticipate the unprecedented attack by Hamas, an Egyptian intelligence official said his country had warned the Jewish state repeatedly about “something big” happening shortly.

The official said Israeli officials had been focused on their struggles in the West Bank and played down the threat from the militant group in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is made up of supporters of West Bank settlers who have demanded a crackdown in the face of a rising tide of violence in the area over the last 18 months.

“We have warned them an explosion of the situation is coming, and very soon, and it would be big. But they underestimated such warnings,” the Egyptian official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press.

I don’t think so. That’s way too strategic for any party in this conflict. I think it was inter-Israeli partisan politics that let it slip by.

Also, Iran certainly wouldn’t be paying for it - which it is - if it was meant to wipe out Iran.

If even the US - no friend of Israel anymore - had sent them a warning and they ignored it, it’s got to be an anside job.

Like all fools who invite the tiger to dine with them, they probably thought it was just going to be a show, in this case, a “bad publicity” event.

Surprise! It’s real and many Israelis and even innocent Palestinians will die as a result. But when your entire life is obsessed with domestic political rivalries, you don’t care.

In Israel, it appears that they want to get rid of Netanyahu, who was in any case about to retire or run for reelection and lose simply because of age and loss of popularity, and boast that they were the ones who had finally “gotten” him.

They were too busy with that to care what was going on. Also, with the left (who have always been anti-Israel at heart, even in Israel), a leftist enemy is only a friend you haven’t met yet. Won’t they be surprised.

Terrible that so many of their people are going to have to pay the price for this.

>>Somebody let it happen to take Bibi down.

Or the opposite. You can’t remove a wartime leader.

think you’re right, there’s an anti-Bibi problem that he needs to get sorted out during the crisis, by ID’ing the culprits and sending them into combat against Hamas.

Maybe they let it happen so Bibi would look bad. But it's possible that they've underestimated the scale of the recent terrorist attacks by Hamas.

“But still - how did they plan, stage and execute something of this magnitude and not get seen? Hundreds, thousands really, had to have known.

I just don’t get it.”

Lots of traitors throughout is the best explanation.

After 9/11, the Syrian state press started a rumor Jews in New York were told to stay home that day. It is easier for anonymous officials to claim they gave prior warning after the fact of than to publicly give warning beforehand.

There were two big prizes. The other one was the oil facilities and repair dry-docks, and Admiral Nagumo screwed up very badly when he left Pearl Harbor without bombing them.

There were multiple warnings to FDR that the Japs would bomb Pearl Harbor. Admiral James O Richardson was forced to retire in February 1941 when he balked at moving the Pacific Fleet from San Diego to Pearl for just that reason.

Then in August 1941 Dusko Popov, a.k.a. Agent Tricycle, Ian Fleming’s chief model for James Bond, told J. Edgar Hoover to his face that the Japs were planning to bomb Pearl Harbor. J. Edgar Hoover later bitterly recalled that he had provided warnings to FDR about Pearl Harbor, but that Roosevelt told him not to pass the information any further and to just leave it in his (the president’s) hands.

Kilsoo Haan, of the Sino-Korean People’s League, received definite word from the Korean underground that the Japanese were planning to assault Hawaii “before Christmas.” In November, after getting nowhere with the State Department, Haan convinced Iowa Senator Guy Gillette of his claim’s merit. Gillette briefed the president, who laconically thanked him and said it would be looked into.

The fleet was stationed at Pearl Harbor as bait, and the Japs took the bait.

Well one way or the other we were going to get into the war, we had to bail out Britain, once the French were defeated.

Most people were isolationists, which was understandable, as most thought it would be another WWI-like war of attrition, until France fell. Then folks started to realize the threat was real, and we’d better get in gear.

I’m not sure which media company it was, but I saw an interview where it was said there was a cyber-attack from Iran on Israeli defenses that hampered their response to the initial reports of Hamas breaking into Israel.* I’m sure the rocket attacks were also distracting the Israelis.

*If true, Iran needs to lose some major assets. I’d start with their refineries, as they are a refined products importer. Next take out their refined products import terminals. That would actually increase global supply of crude oil a bit.

It’s possible that they underestimated it, but the fact is, they didn’t and still don’t care.

The Israeli intel didn’t “miss” it but underestimated the scale and the risk of the attacks.

That's my guess. Israel had relative peace for 20 years since the last Intifada. So they got sloppy.
