NEW YORK - The NYPD says Brian Dowling, an 18-year-old Brooklyn man, is facing murder charges in the deadly stabbing of New York City activist Ryan Carson.

CBS New York was on the scene when Dowling was taken into custody around 10 a.m. Thursday.

Police questioned the 18-year-old at the 81st Precinct, before he was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Surveillance video shows person of interest

Carson and his girlfriend were seen on surveillance video around 4 a.m. Monday sitting at a bus stop on Malcolm X Boulevard in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

Police said a man walked by them, with no interaction. Moments later, as the couple started walking, the man kicked over several moped scooters on the sidewalk, then turned to Carson and said, "What are you looking at?"

"Mr. Carson begins to immediately try to de-escalate the situation," NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said in an earlier briefing.

That's when the suspect pulled out a knife and swung at him, police said. Carson is seen tripping and falling to the ground, and the attacker stabs him three times, piercing his heart.

"As Mr. Carson lay dying on the sidewalk, the male with the knife kicks him in the chest, threatens to stab the woman companion and spits in her face," Kenny said.

Investigators said they do not believe the suspect knew Carson or his girlfriend.

Carson remembered as community advocate

Carson was known for his activism against opioid overdoses. Over last decade, he worked at New York Public Interest Research Group, most recently dealing with recycling and solid waste. Previously, Carson advocated for safe injection facilities.

"He was just all over the place, trying to prevent drugs, just trying to keep the community afloat," said Bed-Stuy resident Gloria Reyes, who knew Carson.

Tributes have been pouring in by candlelight and by post. Mayor Eric Adams wrote Carson "turned his passion into purpose," and Sen. Chuck Schumer described him as "a rising talent and an extraordinary activist."

"Whenever you work with Ryan on an issue, as a colleague, you quickly become a friend because he was such a warm, endearing and fun guy to be around," said Judith Enck, president of Beyond Plastics.

Loved ones also held a vigil at the scene Monday night, just steps away from the home he shared with his roommates.

Shouldn’t have happened but I’m no exactly overcome with grief.

Not something I'd wish on anyone, but he ultimately reaped what he sowed. Much like the citzens of Chicago, who are pitching a fit about the migrants after electing a mayor who's worse than Lightfoot.

People get murdered in New York City almost every day. Schumer and Adams are suddenly concerned about this guy? It’s a murder and a tragedy, but Schumer and Adams might spread the love around.

It was one of the very worst neighborhoods for years.

Lately, people have been trying to “gentrify” it.

The brownstones are a big draw.

But it’s not all brownstones, and it still has an extremely high crime rate.

The fact that a white, left-wing “activist” was stabbed to death by a black guy doesn’t make me feel bad, just as that white, left-wing CEO who was murdered by a black guy in Baltimore, didn’t make me sad either. I do feel sorry for stupid people doing things that bring about their own deaths, however.

That song kind of came true when Billy drove into somebody's house.

Anyway, he's Florida's problem now.

Schumer and Adams are the ones responsible for the horrific crime rate, in NYC.

THEY NEVER WILL ADMIT THAT, either.

DiogenesLamp: "What he says is exactly correct."

This is his argument:

Naw... those are total lies, perpetrated by, no doubt, Democrats super-eager for everyone to ignore their horrible past history of anti-Constitution, pro-slavery, pro-black codes and other forms of discrimination.

Now they want us to believe they are the new enlightened party, who's stolen the lead on Republican's defense of civil liberties and equal opportunity.

In reality, Democrats are just as discriminatory today as they ever were, only the victims and beneficiaries have changed.
Instead of the old system of Republican black slaves & sharecroppers working to support white Democrat slaveholders and property owners, today we have working Americans of all races forced to pay welfare taxes to benefit the Democrat descendants of slaves and others said to be oppressed.

The basic difference between a genuine Republican conservative and Democrats is that Democrats have always opposed the US Constitution, while Republicans descend from those who wrote, ratified and have defended it since 1787.

There are no genuinely conservative Democrats today, nor were there ever very many.
Sadly, many Republicans years ago bought into "progressivism" which seeks to "transform America" without first amending the US Constitution.
And many Republicans are simply too weak-willed to defend what's right against the relentless Democrat onslaughts.

So genuine conservatives struggle to be a majority of Republicans, while Democrats careen ever more insanely into leftist, Marxist, "wokeist", "equity" & LGBTQxyz issues, reframing the meaning of the word "Democratic" to equal that of so-called "Democratic People's Republics", like NoKo.
To Democrats, "our Democracy" now means: single party, top down rule of elites over "deplorable" masses.

And just to make my point for me, Hillary is back in the news today calling for MAGA supporters to be "deprogrammed".

Hillary is a genuine "Democrat", loud and proud about it, too.
The conservative home is the Republican party, because without it, the Constitution is lost and the country destroyed.

This is his argument:

"Let me first explain what I mean by this White liberal. In America there’s no such thing as Democrats and Republicans anymore. That’s antiquated. In America you have liberals and conservatives. This is what the American political structure boils down to among Whites. The only people who are still living in the past and thinks in terms of “I’m a Democrat” or “I’m a Republican” is the American Negro."

Naw... those are total lies, perpetrated by, no doubt, Democrats super-eager for everyone to ignore their horrible past history of anti-Constitution, pro-slavery, pro-black codes and other forms of discrimination.

He's right and you're wrong. Liberals are still trying to use black people as tools to gain and keep political power. I'm just surprised that Malcolm X realized this. He has it exactly right.
