Matt Gaetz: I Had Donald Trump's Blessing to Oust Kevin McCarthy From Speakership
RedState ^ | October 3, 2023 | Bob Hoge

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) was successful Tuesday in his quest to oust Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the Speaker of the House position, and now he’s saying he had former president Donald Trump’s blessing.

Advertisement McCarthy was voted out of the job by a 216-210 tally, and for now, the House is left with Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) as the Speaker Pro Tem. An election will be held to determine the next official speaker, and McCarthy has already come out and said he won't be in the running.

My colleague Duke wondered the other day in his article whether Gaetz would proceed with such a dramatic plan without Trump’s approval. We have our answer:

'I have spoken to President Trump over the last several days,' Gaetz told reporters on the steps of the Capitol after the vote. 'I would say that my conversations with the former president leave me with great confidence that I'm doing the right thing.'

McCarthy became the first speaker in American history to be outed from his job in Tuesday's vote that saw eight members of his own party sink him. Now Republicans will have to deal with the fallout. That not only includes electing a new speaker but dealing with the bloodbath that remains of their party.

Jim Jordan can’t get a majority
Jim Jordan doesn’t want the job.
Jim Jordan voted for McCarthy.

So now what?

95% of lefty Dems voted (202/212) to oust McCarthy, (AOC, The Squad, all of the 202 voted to impeach Trump) I think will go with Jordan over AOC

The problem with a narrow majority is that it enhances the leverage of even tiny groups of fringe players. This is exactly what unfolded here.

Nobody would even know Matt Gaetz’s name if the GOP had a 40-seat majority in the House.

McCarthy was the best Republican Speaker we’ve had in decades. But that’s not saying much. McCarthy got about as much done as is possible, playing by Establishment rules. And that’s the problem.

Sure, there are limits to what he could do as Speaker when the Democrats still control the senate and the presidency. But his acceptance of the GOPe position that shutdowns are unacceptable was a major shortcoming of his. I understand the challenge of keeping together a coalition when maybe about 1/3 of your caucus are dyed in the wool RINOs, but maybe it’s time for a shift in the balance of power.

MAGA conservatives have been the jr. partner in the Republican coalition - not among the voters but among their representatives. That has to be challenged at some point. Now’s as good a time as any. I don’t expect an Andy Biggs or a MTG to become the next Speaker but if we can get someone a little more to the right of McCarthy, then that will be a step in the right direction.

If a shake up is going to happen, now’s the time. We still over a year till the election so, by then the dust will have had time to settle.

It seems appropriate to remind ourselves,
that this did not turn out well for us.

Demwits in congress are all lefties (or they’d better be, or get canceled). We have no such common denominator.
Our side is trifurcated: country club pubbies, Christian right pubbies and libertarian pubbies. None of them like each other very much. Christian right and libertarian pubbies are poles apart, and insist on their own peculiar purities. Country club pubbies care mostly about commerce, fiscal soundness and smooth operations.

There is no common bond except love of country. Now, I’d expect them to pull together if for no other reason than that; but so far, no go.

now that the camel was allowed under the tent, we have the mess we see today.

If I recall, the architect of that grand design also sat on the couch with pelosi reaching a consensus on the dire threat imposed by global warming. That same person today stabbed Gaetz in the back for calling McCarthy out for his broken promises.

“ It’ll be a good thing if they get a non-Rino to replace him.”

We will be very fortunate if it’s not a democrat that becomes speaker.

I would stay out of it if possible, if I were in Trump’s shoes, because people will only be reminded that McCarthy was another of Trump’s less than optimal personnel choices.

Another problem is that the gop are beholden to financial contributions from woke corporations. so they are committed to give them a profitable return on investment. Those contributions are also distributed among rinos for their election campaign.

In order to shield the rinos from exposing who they really are, spineless speakers such as McCarthy never really puts them to the test on votes.

I really think what Gaetz was getting at is McCarthy was not really responsible for the outcome, but just to simply bring the votes to the floor, and if it made rinos vulnerable for reelection challenges, so be it.They should then be primaried.

Trump does need to stay out of it, at least publicly, but my take is a little different. If you’re playing the long game, which I believe Trump is, you’ve got to figure out how to get from point A to point B. Just because Trump endorsed McCarthy, back in January, doesn’t mean he viewed it as anything other than a temporary alliance.

Just because you choose someone to be your starting pitcher doesn’t mean that you have to, or even intend to keep him in the game all nine innings.

Good to know Trump was fed up with McCarthy and was as glad as most of us are to see him out as speaker.

He did endorse based largely on the recommendation of MTG and Jim Jordan.

But, Trump like those that break the promises. McCarthy cutting a secret deal with Biden on the Ukraine war was certainly grounds, in and of itself, to support Gaetz.

exactly. not to mention funding victories. As well as blocking Trump on many issues (along with McConnells help) since McConnel and pelosi had common goals-to destroy Trump.

on the other hand, McCarthy is credited to assisting bidens policies.

BTW, if Trumps endorsement got DeSantis elected as governor, he could likely do the same for Gaetz.

“How is it that far left nancy pelosi was able to deliver, for the far left, far left victories with a slim majority?”

Because, as Steve Bannon says, “She’s hammer.”

She ruthless and determined — as our pols should be.
