Why is DeSantis tanking?

WHY IS DESANTIS TANKING? A new poll Wednesday from the University of New Hampshire shook up the world of political obsessives who watch each twist and turn in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. No, there was no change at the top — former President Donald Trump is still in the lead in New Hampshire, 26 points ahead of the nearest competitor. The news was that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), for a long time Trump's chief rival, has slipped to fifth place in New Hampshire, the second state to vote in the GOP primary contest.

Fifth place! How did that happen? How did DeSantis come to trail not only Trump, with 39% of the vote, but, in order, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, with 13%; former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, with 12%; and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, with 11%? DeSantis's 10% of the vote in New Hampshire puts him at what might be called the bottom of the second tier. The first tier, of course, is Trump all by himself. The second tier is the group from Ramaswamy to DeSantis. After that, the third tier is Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), with 6%, former Vice President Mike Pence, with 2%, and Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND) and former Texas Rep. Will Hurd, with 1% each.

The first thing to consider is whether the new Granite State poll is an outlier. The answer is, it appears not. There haven't been many polls in New Hampshire — just one so far this month, two in August, and three in July — but DeSantis has been bobbing around between 8% and 11% since the summer. Before that, in polls going back to January, he was significantly higher.

The real problem with DeSantis is he is totally delusional.

He has been a very good governor of Florida. He has done a fine job. Although most of what you like about Florida he inherited. It’s not like he revolutionized Florida. Everything was already in place, the no income taxes, all that stuff. All the things you like were already there, he just maintained it very well. He was very good on his own about cutting spending. He did a good job there.

But he is NOT presidential. He is like a local, regional “manager.” That’s where he is great. He would be an excellent Secretary of Transportation. But he is not presidential. He has no campaign skills. At all.

Big mistake to enter the race. He should have waited 4 years, maybe 8 years. He is a young guy, he is in his 40s, he should have waited.

But he jumped in totally delusional. And he listened to the big donors. And he doesn’t know his history. Those big donors are ALWAYS wrong about candidates. They always back the wrong candidates. They always do it every single time. It’s been charted out, and documented, the history of this. But he listened to them, the Bush crowd, all of that stuff. He’s from the “Jeb Bush” wing of the Republicans so it was a disaster.

The problem is he delusional. He can’t get out. He is a very nasty guy to everybody in real life. He is a very stubborn guy in real life. So he should have when that hurricane hit, said I have to drop out of the race to deal with that, my state and the problems there and got out that way.

But he is going to stay in til the end.

He was tied with Trump at one point when he started. Then he was 10 points behind, then he was 20 points behind, then 30, even 40, then 50. He’s heading to 60 points behind. In NH he is in 5th place. So he is not only a complete and total disaster, his whole campaign this year is a dumpster fire.

But many believe he has completely screwed up any shot at 2028. Nobody will ever go to him again.

He listened to the wrong people early on. He really believes they want to help him; actually they are using him to help themselves further destroy the country. DeSantis will be shocked to wake up one day and learn the truth.

progs are deeply saddened that their pet RINO is stuck in the mud.

Ron should be “50 points ahead” but that mean tweeting PDJT will not obey the GoPe so it is Trump that is 50 points ahead.

Serious question, will Trump be prevented from running by all of the lawfare being thrown at him? Will he be incarcerated, unjustly so, but incarcerated?

Good luck, getting any trials in before the end of 2024.

It would take a miracle.(So it’s possible.)

It’s very simple: Donald Trump won reelection and had it stolen from him. He is literally owed the presidency. Any Republican standing athwart of that is not worth a look.

DeSantis has been rejected by the base because the base despises his Allie’s and money men. American Republicans know that thr big donations come with agreements to policy and the money men hate America and the base.

@$#%! the Big Money Me and their paid for meat puppet DeSantis.

Disagree.

You left out his excellent handling of two hurricane recoveries.

Natural disasters are unexpected emergencies that require nimble response and decisive decision making and action. Look at how Kathleen Blanco handled Katrina in Louisiana; how Gavin Newsom handled wildfires and earthquakes in California, how Hawaii is handling the wildfires there, even how Puerto Rico handled Maria.

Sudden natural disasters are a good test of the executive leadership abilities of people. DeSantis passed this test with flying colors relative to his peers. It's as good a test of Presidential crisis management as anything else out there before taking the job as we can get.

I wouldn't dismiss it so casually.

Unfortunately, he let Rove and other Bushites convince him that he could defeat Trump. They don’t really care about defeating Biden, Trump is the target.

Florida rebuilds after hurricanes every year. It is expected and nothing new to them. It doesn’t mean you can be president. It like being an all star on the 8th grade basketball team and thinking you can play in the NBA.

"IMHO DeSantis would be in first place if Trump gets taken out by the Xiden's Dept of Injustice."

I wouldn't vote for him even then. He's an arrogant dud.

Nonsense. You talk of Florida in isolation. What about New Orleans?

Why don't you compare DeSantis to Blanco?

Excellent point. I keep telling Angry Trumpers this fundamental truth, but you know what they always come back with?

“Trump or Bust!”

Seriously. If Trump is not on the ballot they will sit home or write his name in or some other futile gesture of despair and let America go under.

This they would rather have than America’s great governor.

Presidential races reduce otherwise competent men to has-beens…very quickly. He used to be respected here, as Governor of Florida, but you’d think he was Antichrist the way some FReepers talk about him.
