CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Pre-Trial Fairness Act, part of the SAFE-T Act that eliminates cash bail, goes into effect Monday morning.
Many local elected officials plan to celebrate the elimination of cash bail which takes effect Monday after extensive delays and legal challenges from some prosecutors and law enforcement leaders who sought to keep the existing system in place.
Under the existing system, a judge can set bail as a means of ensuring the defendant will show up for court hearings.
However, starting Monday, that will no longer be the case.
If a judge decides a defendant does not pose a public safety or flight risk, they will be released without being required to post any money.
People arrested for violent crimes will likely be detained by a judge.
"Ideally, what this will cause is a more careful, a more thorough consideration of the risk posed by defendants of the likelihood the defendant will appear when he or she is supposed to appear," ABC7 Political Analyst Gil Soffer said.
Advocates for the Pre-Trial Fairness Act sid the previous system punished people for being poor and caused tens of thousands of people to lose their jobs, housing and even custody of their children because they couldn't afford to pay bond.

In Chicago?
Yeah, right.
Unless they have evidence of wrongdoing by a local Dem or their kids.
This is a great way to reduce the rate of violent crime. /sarc
Just in time for flat screen tv season!
“People arrested for violent crimes will likely be detained by a judge.”
No they won’t.
L
Either there will be overcrowding in local jails that will be filled with pretrial defendants, or there will be runaway crime from violent pretrial defendants being released without cash bail because of overcrowding of local jails.
Cash bail does more than just ensure that a defendant shows up at trial. It more or less enlists a private police force (bail bondsmen) to ensure that the defendants show up.
So they’re practicing Catch and Release? Do they at least weigh them and measure them before they throw them back?
“Do they at least weigh them and measure them before they throw them back?”
An ear tag would be a good idea.
But, Dems being Dems, it means NO bail whatsoever. Good plan. NOT.
Crime is so rampant in Chicago, the get out of jail free card probably won’t make a blip there. I would expect to see a large increase in crime in the suburbs. Retail is going to get picked clean. Car jacking seems to be popular too.
I am convinced that the dumbest laws in Illinois are being passed under intense lobbying pressure from the Indiana and Iowa Chambers of Commerce.
Way to go, Chicago!
Ever since Biden took office, it seems like crime has skyrocketed. Things like car theft and porch pirating seem to happen every day around here and are probably problems across the country.
I guess it wasn’t enough for Chicago, though, so they took the next step in being even more criminal friendly. Blast the ordinary people, they aren’t important!
Let ma peoples go!
Excellent!
Hopefully crime will go through the roof, and Illinois will collapse completely.
Stupid Commies.
I think NYS did this 2 years ago,
“Advocates for the Pre-Trial Fairness Act” need to live in the high crime neighborhoods for a while instead of their secure fancy high rises or leafy suburbs.
It sounds like the Illinois “Justus” system doesn’t GAS if you show up for court or not. Lawlessness is the new rule in this country.
Exactly. That explains the huge reduction in crime the Dung Beetle Party has their toads in the “media” reporting about. You can do just about anything, as long as you’re not an American conservative, and it is no longer considered a crime. Eight years for murder but 20 years for peein’ on Nanzi Pelosi’s laptop. What the.....!
