A Food and Drug Administration panel today unanimously ruled that a medicine used by millions for a stuffy nose does not work.
Phenylephrine is the most common active compound in over-the-counter drugs like Benadryl Allergy Plus Congestion, Sudafed PE, and Tylenol Cold and Flu Severe Day & Night.
But an FDA panel said after a two-day review that the oral decongestant ‘is not effective’ at standard or even high doses.
Their ruling is not binding but it strongly suggests that the agency could soon heed their advice and pull its approval, which would force companies to pull or reformulate their products.
The ingredient is protected under the FDA’s Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective (GRASE) designation, but a reversal of its approval could mean manufacturers including Bayer and Johnson and Johnson might need to reformulate.

I suffer from lots of allergies.
I have to testify, that those pills work the best, bringing instant relief. Benadryl makes you sleepy, it is used sometimes as a sleeping pill, which limits its usage and makes other pills more popular, but as an allergy relief, there is nothing better.
I guess I am an exception?!
Or those dickhead are totally stupid!
I think TFA is referring to “Benadryl Allergy Plus Congestion” which is diphenhydramine (Regular working, make-you-sleepy Benadryl) and (the now recognized as non-working) phenylephrine.
Correct, I even use it on my 12 lb senior Moarkie, only 1 child’s pill. Works for her.
Good as a sleeping pill too.
I use Claritin year-round. Stops those Upper Repirories crud from starting.
Also kept you awake. Pulled some all-nighters with it in college. Legal speed.
Either they want nothing out there that could alleviate covid symptoms or else they want to put new products on the market that cost more and are by prescription.
Good point.
If it is absorbed well through that way, it might cause dangerous rise in bp.(potential for stroke, MI...Plus it’s other side effects could exacerbate high blood sugars, decrease urine flow with prostatic hypertrophy.
Knowing the drug cultures unending search for a cheap high...those methods might already be being used...( Grind up the tabs and inhale it). Or inject it...very dangerous.
Everyone-this article references phenylephrine, not pseudoephedrine.
“Sudafed PE is used for short-term relief of nasal congestion from the common cold, sinusitis, upper respiratory allergies, and hay fever. The main active ingredient in Sudafed PE is phenylephrine. This drug relieves symptoms of congestion by narrowing the blood vessels in your nasal passages. This narrowing reduces the secretions within the nasal passages and helps you breathe more freely.
The main active ingredient of regular Sudafed, on the other hand, is called pseudoephedrine. This drug is tightly controlled, which is why Sudafed can only be purchased behind the counter at the drugstore.”
Same brand names for both, but different drugs.
Also, the BENADRYL in the article contains phenylephrine, not the Benadryl that is diphenhydramine.
Same brand names for both, but different drugs.
“Diver’s Reds”
You can still get pseudoephedrine hydrochloride but the pharmacies keep it behind lock and key and the DEA tracks the purchases.
Indeed. Covid 19 shots, on the market for 3 years and perfectly safe and 100% effective. TRUST the muh science.
Yep. Stock up now.
You cant, They already track how much you buy to make sure you’re not making Meth
Does Phenylephrine work for you? It’s useless for me. Pseudoephedrine, OTOH, works very well for me.
I forget all about the stuffy nose...when the Benadryl puts me to sleep.
“Regular Benadryl helps me sleep”
Me too. I don’t sleep without it.
It’s the only thing that stops my sinus migraines too.
"Real" sudafed (with pseudoephedrine) can still be gotten from the pharmacist without a prescription. It's more expensive that it should be, though.
Pseudoephedrine works. But they decided to put small methlab operators who use smurfs to buy the original OTC Sudo out of business. The result was simply to make the Mexican superlabs even more profitable, and aggravate anyone with upper respiratory problems to either use the replacement, which is crap, or show their DLs and get put on a watchlist if they wanted to continue to use real Sudo, which is a miracle drug.
The correct response is to take Pseudoephedrine off the controlled schedule and put it back on the unrestricted OTC, and get rid of the useless substitute they've been pushing for 20 years.
Based on what?
In have read that about 38% of an oral dose of phenylephrine is absorbed ....so some of it gets through the gut wall and liver destruction of it. Absorbed erratically.
But...”it doesn’t work”?...carefully constructed misinformation from the losers in the media..
All the semi-ban has done is make it more difficult for small drug makers to function, while making the Mexican superlabs, which use methylamine (or produce methylamine by reducing precursors with strong bases) all the more profitable.
yes it does work, cheap too.
