New York City education officials were scrambling Tuesday to get as many migrant kds registered before the start of school in two days.

About 19,500 kids currently live in temporary housing — most of them asylum seekers — according to recent numbers released by City Hall — and most have been enrolled since 2022.

With public schools set to open on Sept. 7, the Big Apple is moving into the next phase of the humanitarian crisis: finding room, money, and teachers to handle the influx of children who speak more than a dozen languages.

At a Long Island City Holiday Inn-turned-shelter, Yohanna Silva, 46, said her 11-year-old son was registering for the 7th grade at the Queens’ Academy for New Americans, a middle school located inside Astoria’s PS 234.

I hope state official are doing health screenings and giving immunizations.

My wife was a school nurse back when there was an influx of legal refugees from Bosnia. Of course their health and immunization records were spotty or nonexistent and a major complication was that many of the refugees were given a BCG vaccine for TB. While this vaccine was popular in Europe, it is not particularly effective and anyone who receives it will have a positive TB skin test and had to then have a chest X-ray to rule out actual TB. A school in a neighboring district had a student with active TB that was missed by the screening. The entire school had to be tested for TB and nearly a dozen students and staff had to have a year of taking anti TB drugs.

This situation is even worse and I would expect school districts around the country to have outbreaks of TB and other communicable diseases common in third world countries.

So the kids in New York get three extra weeks of summer vacation compared to those in the Chicagoland area. When I was a kid we started school after Labor day as well but my grandchildren went back in the middle of August.

Why are these foreigners our problem? Why should any Americans have to scramble to find resources for foreigner’s who came here ILLEGALLY especially when our elderly, homeless and vets don’t get properly taken care of.
