Alabama set to be first state to execute a prisoner by forcing them to breathe pure nitrogen

Alabama may become the first state to execute a prisoner by making him breathe pure nitrogen, a death penalty method that is authorized by three states but has never been used.

The office of Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall asked the state Supreme Court in a court filing on Friday to set an execution date for 58-year-old death row inmate Kenneth Eugene Smith. The filing revealed Alabama intends to put him to death by nitrogen hypoxia.

Smith was one of two men convicted in the 1988 murder-for-hire killing of a preacher’s wife. “It is a travesty that Kenneth Smith has been able to avoid his death sentence for nearly 35 years after being convicted of the heinous murder-for-hire slaying of an innocent woman, Elizabeth Sennett,” Marshall said in a statement.

The Bends happens because the Oxygen bubbles expand in the Nitrogen when the Scuba divers go to the surface.

It will not happen if the recipient doesn’t change altitude while strapped to the gurney.

They don’t. They use dogs to experiment with execution drugs, and the result isn’t pretty. My daughter and I had this discussion just last night, and she disagreed with me. Then, she listed the drugs used to kill my dog which are the same ones used for execution, but one. They relaxed him, paralyzed him, and then burned the crap out of his veins and heart with potassium. The never put him to sleep so he wiuldn’t suffer. I told he that when it comes time to put my current dog down, it will be with the same drugs that drug addicts use. They never know they even passed out and died when you wake them up with narcan.

People who commit horrible autricities have earned some potassium pain, but dogs don’t.

I hàve no idea what nitrogen does except that it’s in normal breathing air.

I wonder if carbon dioxide would be just as effective as nitrogen. It would have the benefit of carbon sequestration, right?

No. You have sensors in your physiology that cause you to breath when CO2 gets above a certain level. There is no similar mechanism for nitrogen gas. You simply cease getting oxygen when the "air" you are breathing is changed to pure nitrogen. A few seconds and you pass out. A couple minutes later the brain and heart fail for lack of oxygen.

God hasn’t changed but his covenant sure has. From the Old Covenant of the law to the New Covenant of Grace.

“For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins [b]and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.”

Heb. 8:7-13.

“Don’t believe I know anyone who is not against an unjust death penalty!”

How many double negatives are in that statement? I have no idea what you just said.

Yes, and 1500 years of temple visual-aid up to the cross and 2000 years after the cross should have made it very clear that Jesus suffered that very thing for all mankind (1 John 2:2).

They won’t even experience nitrogen narcosis if the nitrogen is at normal atmospheric pressure. Nitrogen narcosis only happens at higher pressures than that (otherwise we’d all be buzzed all the time). Wikipedia has a pretty good entry about nitrogen narcosis.

Why not just dunk then in LIQUID Nitrogen?

That would be cool if the victim's family could then use the corpsicle as a pinata.

They harassed drug companies to not sell the execution drugs to states with the death penalty so this is it.

Exactly. It is also a positive development IMO, as it removes the objection to a doctor violating the hippocratic oath. I've been a major proponent of using Nitrogen for execution for ages. It is clean, quick, and only the most ridiculous objections to it can be made. You aren't using anything that is not already pervasive our environment already.

About the only real objection would be from those who do not believe the state should have the power to kill in any case. I can sympathize with that position to a small degree, but believe justice is properly served by executions in some cases.

My arguments against the unjust death penalty are found here (under “Jim W N”).

The death penalty is unjust double jeopardy, Jesus already having died for all of the egregious crimes and unconscionable acts of all mankind (1 John 2:2) and is useful only to assuage the bloodthirstiness of the angry mob..

Bad theology:Jesus Christ did not only die for "all of the egregious crimes and unconscionable acts of all mankind" but for all sins, and thus by your double jeopardy logic, no one can be punished for any sins, including rejecting the Lord Jesus. And whose atonement is only efficacious for those who receive him, like as the prepared feast did not benefit the invited persons unless they responded positively to the invite! (Luke 14:15-24)

And thus those who die in their sins will face eternal punishment, as will the devil. (Mt. 25:31-46; Rv. 20:10-15))

And thus your position is also contrary to Scripture which affirms the just use of the sword of men by the government. (Rm. 13:1-7)

What is wrong is that in Biblical justice (in which there are many capital offenses) not only are 2 or 3 eye-witnesses (a principle) required for conviction but those whose false testimony caused one to suffer are to receive the punishment that there false testimony resulted in. (Deuteronomy 19:15-21)

Moreover, public stoning was the normative Biblical form of capital punishment, versus antiseptic executions by the state, and communal stoning corresponds to crime also being against the community in general, and serves as a deterring reminder to all of the consequences of sins (and of false testimony), as well as providing a better sense of justice.

Jesus hung between two criminals being executed for their crimes. If ever there was an opportunity for him too condemn the death penalty, that was it. But He didn’t, did He?

The bends are a pressure thing, not a nitrogen thing.

When the pressure is very high, gas is forced into the blood stream. When it is reduced suddenly, it bubbles out into the veins and flesh instead of coming out gradually through respiration.

The death penalty for murder is never unjust.

God established it before the Law was given, in Genesis 9:6.

Are you really accusing God of being unjust by establishing the death penalty for murder and other crimes??

Sounds like a lot of the industrial accidents involved people who did not even know they were dying. Does not seem as if much pain is associated with this form of execution.

Yes. That's why there are loads of OSHA regs around processes where there is a possibility of excess nitrogen concentrations. People had dropped dead walking across a room. They had no idea they were dying.
