Ron DeSantis was winner of the first 2024 Republican debate — the man best suited to unseat Trump
New York Post ^ | August 23, 2023 | Isaac Schorr

Only two questions mattered going into Wednesday night’s GOP primary debate.

Number one: Would any one viable candidate stand out among the crowd?

Number two: If the answer to the first was “Yes,” would our champion distinguish themselves by acting as the absent Donald Trump’s proxy or by setting up a favorable contrast with the frontrunner?

Trump’s decision to sit out the first forum of the 2024 primary season has been cast as a cautious, cowardly decision.

It was undoubtedly the latter, but despite the illusion of political safety, the choice also came with considerable risks.

If another candidate was able to command the stage, it would be a strong sign that the race is not predestined to end with Trump atop the ticket as so many pundits have suggested.

By not showing up, Trump risked ceding centerstage to a younger, less fearful rival.

Of course, not everyone on stage represented a genuine threat.

...

DeSantis answered the first with a resounding yes.

And even if he didn’t go for the kill on Wednesday, DeSantis demonstrated a willingness – and ability – to take Trump on.

He’s playing for the top prize, not a place in Trump’s Cabinet, or more likely his court at Mar-a-Lago.

With his performance, DeSantis cemented himself as the man best suited to unseat Trump as the undisputed champion of Republican politics.

While so many of his colleagues onstage replied to questions with a decided lack of purpose, DeSantis spoke both fluently and passionately.

...

Judging from Wednesday night, DeSantis alone appears to have the stuff to beat Trump.

It may remain an uphill battle, but by beginning the climb, he may have the man at the top of the mountain second-guessing his decision to sit Wednesday out.

I thought it was horrible. It just made me sad that those candidates were the best that we had, in the case that the Democrats manage to knock out Trump. Pence and his Christian virtue signaling was offensive. DeSantis looked scared and defensive, like he wasn’t sure where he stood with Republicans.

There was just not a single person on the stage that we could trust. They were all Elitists.

“Trump. He is the outsider. And those people on that stage aren’t. They are the group Fox is trying to sell you. Trump voters are no longer listening.”

Agreed.

It seems like Fox fires their most popular people: Beck, O’Reilly, Kelly, and Carlson.

I never got a bead on Megyn Kelly, but she was nice to look at. The other three I really like(d). Maybe I’ll pony up the bucks and only watch ex-Fox newscasters. Better yet, they could make their own network, Alt-Fox.

I really wanted to support DeSantis.

But—he has thrown President Trump under the bus.

That makes him a pathetic coward—totally unqualified to lead anyone anywhere.

Christie’s song was “I’m an A-hole, I’m an A-hole, I’m an A-hole do or die!” I was laughing as he was repeatedly booed by the audience. He deserved every bit of it.

Tim Scott was doing that loud whisper thing that annoys me to no end. I wish he would quit.

Nikki Haley came off very much as entrenched establishment and deep state sympathetic. She is a hard no for me.

Hutchinson seemed to drone on with forgettable rhetoric. He was a snooze fest.

Burgum didn’t seem to get much time and was forgettable when he did.

The flip side, does trump have a path to get DeSantis supporters? Because with out a doubt both men will need the others supporters in the general.

If a 3rd party candidate doesn't emerge, I'll vote for Trump if he is the eventual nominee. But honestly, I would vote for Manchin as 3rd party before I would vote for Trump. I'm that far unattached from him at this point.

“Haley and Vivek”

Together, they would sweep the Indian-American vote. Hail to the Redskins. :)

Winning that debate is like declaring De Santis the tallest midget in the room. Do you think that “winning” this debate is going to get him above 15 percent in all the polls?

Tell It Right, thanks for the response. I can agree that Vivek will help keep the conversation towards topics conservatives want, but I think DeSantis is already there and certainly right of Trump for sure.

“others were doing the heavy lifting”

Perhaps true if you think the only job of a politician is to show up on stage.

“DeSantis won.”

I was wondering how you DeSantis-bots would spin his lackluster performance, his cowardice over raising his hand, etc.

Just keep believing that, if it gives you comfort. Murdoch owns the New York Post, so, you will have trouble finding another like voice.

How will we afford the dire consequences of the open border
The threat of nuclear war

Did anyone say we should try to bring the Ukrainian-Russian war to an end?

So, you’re saying Trump voters won’t consider a person on their own merits just on whether the Donald approves of them. That is one of the most perfectly stated examples if the Cult of Personality affecting this country, I’ve ever seen in print.

I hope the majority if GOP primary voters are not so narrowed minded.

“Agreed that DeSantis was in command of the evening and managed to communicate successfully (generally) within the time constraints. Importantly, he did not insult or quibble with the other debaters.”

That is why very few noticed him or are talking about him today. With the exception of FOX news of course. Yawn

“the man best suited to unseat Trump”

What an odd perspective. Not the one best suited to lead the nation, nor even the one best suited to take back the White House for the GOP. Just the one best suited to stop Orange Man Bad. That’s all we care about, apparently.

“And how do you explain how nearly everyone that once was picked and worked with Trump no longer support him.”

Your understanding of the prosecutorial strongarming tactics is lacking.

Seems to me the vast majority are standing with Trump.

As for loyalty within the DC-class, the treachery there speaks for itself. If you are expecting loyalty from anyone in that sphere, that speaks more to your naivete.

Politics is one of the few professions that require you to lie next to dogs. Getting fleas is an occupational hazard.

X-Twitter still won't let me view it a second time on my X-Twitter account that was permanently suspended along with a couple hundred thousand other other people on that fateful January 6th. Normally it lets us look at anything, we just can't "Follow" or post.

Musk spoke of Government "backdoor code" in Twitter; He may not be in control and probably cannot restore most of our accounts. (Appeals are automatically dismissed.)

How many views did the clown show debate get? 🐸🤣
