I grew up in Western MA in an urban environment. Schools were integrated. Everyone went to high school in one of the three high schools “downtown.” Everyone was bussed.

It wasn’t until I went to college with a bunch of Boston area people that I heard REAL racist talk and saw real racist behavior. It was a culture shock.

The only other time that I heard that level of hate was in Central Florida. Even in MS, where my sister lived, the racism existed—but it wasn’t so hateful.

I live in Alabama, but have served in and visited Massachusetts many times over the years.

They are far more racists up there than down here.

Here, the races exist together. They are born in the same hospitals, go to the same day cares, kindergartens and through high school. They’ll work at the same places and retire to the same towns and eventually same nursing homes, and when they die, they’re all buried in the same cemetaries.

Up North especially the rural areas, in New England, the Upper Midwest, Great Plains, West Coast and the Rocky Mountain states—outside the big cities—blacks are a rarity. In the South, blacks and whites live next door even—and sometimes moreso—in the same rural places as well as suburbs and cities.

I moved to SC ten years ago from Ct. I was pleasantly surprised how blacks and whites here get along quite well. We treat each other with respect and cordiality in the public market place. Both black and white children are very well raised. They have good manners and have respect for their elders. I can’t tell you how many times I have had doors held open for me. I think the wide spread practice of Christian worship has a lot to do with it. We all realize that there are bad people in both races and that no one has a monopoly on evil.

I spent too much of my life in Boston. Here is what I learned:
1. The white liberals are racist.
2. The black liberals are racist.

I am hoping the pseudo-scientific fear mongers are right about that volcano on some island off the coast of Africa dropping its face into the Atlantic Ocean setting off a 48-foot tsunami headed for Boston which will decrease the population of Boston from 2020 levels to 1630 levels.
