I normally take the Hatem (since the Land of Peasant Living slaps a big user fee on the Toll by Plate for the Tydings bridge).

I just kept a big bundle of ones in the glove box of my truck.
But that was a couple of decades ago.

He was either the pilot or a passenger. Which?
To: Thank You Rush
Poor writing. He was the only person on the plane, so they’re calling him pilot and passenger...

For sure. My husband was a pilot and CFII but wasn’t considered a passenger - that would have been me, I guess! I took a “pinch hitter” course from him in the ‘70s - 10 hours - of basic landing procedures IN CASE OF!!!!!! I would have preferred to run out of fuel or be shot down than have to put it into practice if needed!

The two primary causes of civil aviation crashes; fuel mismanagement (running out of gas) and flying into conditions you are not prepared for e.g. weather. Saturday’s weather in that area was iffy and deteriorated badly in the late afternoon. The Cherokee is a nice little plane but not for adverse conditions.

It wasn't a Cherokee, it was an Arrow, a PA-28R-200. The PA-28 designation includes the Cherokee but this particular airframe was an Arrow.
Lazy writing and failure to confirm the details of the story.
"... Investigators have yet to determine what led to the crash, the outlet reported on Friday...."
I'll say. They haven't even yet released a preliminary report.
In better days. Yes, that's a Hershey bar wing, so it's an older airframe.
