It wasn't a Cherokee, it was an Arrow, a PA-28R-200. The PA-28 designation includes the Cherokee but this particular airframe was an Arrow.

Lazy writing and failure to confirm the details of the story.

I wondered. My father had a Piper Arrow II that I used to fly. Nice plane. RIP to the deceased.
