The leader of Spain's opposition conservative party Alberto Núñez Feijóo has claimed victory in a snap election, but without the result he needed.
Even with the support of the far right, his Popular Party has fallen short of a majority in parliament.
The cheers at the rival Socialist camp were just as loud as Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared: "The reactionary bloc has failed."
While both can claim success, Spain is left with an inconclusive result.
Mr Sánchez has been vindicated in his controversial decision to call elections in the searing heat of a Spanish summer, when temperatures reached 40C in some parts of the country.
"No pasarán," his supporters chanted - they shall not pass - referring both to far-right party Vox and the anti-fascist slogan of the Spanish civil war.
But it was Mr Feijóo who told cheering supporters that it was now his duty to try to form a government. "Spaniards know we have gone from being the second force to the party with the most votes," he said.
But with Vox on 33 seats and his PP on 136, they would be seven seats short of an absolute majority in parliament, so the most likely result of this election is another poll by the end of the year. That is why Mr Sánchez's Socialists and his far-left allies Sumar can feel happy.

Lucky that won’t happen here next elect........ Oh. A hundred million you say?
Spanish Civil War 2.0.
more vote fraud, most likely
“Democracy” has failed
I guess the Left has mastered cheating in Spain as well. There can’t be a democratic revolution if one side has no qualms about cheating.
“Even with the support of the far right,”
That’s enough for me to doubt the reporter. Trying to discern the truth from leftist news reporting is kind of like trying to learn the truth as an old time Kremlin watcher.
Funny how ‘unexpected’ results always seem to favor the Globalists.
Eventually they’ll try that stunt in a country where people are still able to ‘voice’ their opinion on that trend.
The British Bolshevik Corporation is spinning the leftist defeat as best they can.
A bit of a disappointment, but minority governments are par for the course in Spain lately.
Let’s see what they manage to put together. What’s clear is that the PSOE cannot put together their own coalition, so they are out for now.
All they to do is make a deal with Junts Party (Catalonian Populists) and they will have their seven seats they need.
They will have to make concessions on autonomy, which may not fly with Vox.
But who knows. Power may matter more.
Power always matters more.
Sounds like another “ fortefied” election to me.
far right,
aka
Non communist
For others who may be reading and don’t know the history of the Spanish Civil War: Antifascist = Communist.
Yep the left cheat machine came to the rescue
While politics makes strange bedfellows, this is the only possible ruling coalition:
PP (136) + Vox (33) + Basque-PNV (5) + Canary Islands (1) + Navarre (1) = 176
Gloomy and doomy comments. This is a BBC article! Seven seats from am absolute majority is pretty good.
Did boxes of “ballots” from the last precincts in Atlanta save the leftists?
“No pasarán,” his supporters chanted - they shall not pass - referring to the anti-fascist slogan of the Spanish civil war.”
