US plans water heater standards, says will save consumers $11 billion yearly

The U.S. Department of Energy on Friday proposed energy efficiency standards on water heaters it said would save consumers $11.4 billion on energy and water bills annually.

The standards on residential water heater efficiency, which are required by Congress, have not been updated in 13 years. Water heating is responsible for roughly 13% of both annual residential energy use and consumer utility costs, the DOE said.

The proposal would require the most common-sized electric water heaters to achieve efficiency gains with heat pump technology and gas-fired water heaters to achieve efficiency gains through condensing technology.

The government does not do anything to benefit the working people, so this is obviously bogus.

“the general welfare” is the penumbra they use... for whatever they want to do... that is not really within their legal purview.

them controlling everything they can think of and doing ever more so constantly, is always in support of the general welfare.

Obumber’s low-flush toilet you had to flush twice?

I'm still flushing twice. It's a long way to Washington...

Oh, it will be like the low water toilet that won’t flush crap.

...to coin a phrase.

Whatever happened to those solar hot water systems they had back in the 70’s?

Hmm, you were not raised south of the Mason/Dixon line, were you?

I take particular umbrage at that comment, Sir. Born in the capital of the Confederacy: Richmond, Virginia. Raised there and other parts of the South until college in Yankeeland. Came back after that here to North Carolina. Southerner all the way. But I still never hard the term "dookie."

No government instituted standard has ever resulted in reduced expenditures by the serfs...

“Water heating is responsible for roughly 13% of both annual residential energy use and consumer utility costs”

If you added up all these percentages they cite, I wonder what it would come out to.

And they often no longer fit in the spaces that were designed for them.

So true. Mine almost didn't fit. (see my #21)

Just like they ‘fixed’ washing machines: I bought my front loader just before they eliminated warm water wash.

Thus, I spent 3 days rebuilding it when the bearing went out.

Best washing machine I’ve ever owned (GE; knock on wood).

Oh, it will be like the low water toilet that won’t flush crap.

LOL. Literally. At one time a couple decades ago there was a local business manufacturing a modification flush kit for the older toilets which made for a low flush for #1 and had a #2 flush.

I wish I had that #2 flush. Limited options these days without going to a commercial toilet (or an old green one).

;-) Thx

Even less for those who can manage a mea culpa (in my experience)...

Gas cooktop is absolutely, positively in my kitchen remodel plans, however.

WATER heaters for MANUFACTURED homes already cost 4 times a regular one in a stick built house.

Something about the venting.

THOSE spaces are pre-determined-—you cannot ‘JUST ADD A BIGGER SPACE”.

As far as I can tell, "energy efficient" is achieved by lowering the "power" of whatever appliance you are using. The last electric stove that I got was "energy efficient". It now takes more than 30 minutes to get a pot of water to boil in order to cook some pasta. With the new washing machine and dryer that are "energy efficient", it now takes me most of the day to wash/dry 2-3 loads of clothes.

I hate "greenies".
