The suspect in the Gilgo Beach murders, a case that captured national attention and confounded investigators on Long Island for more than a decade, was identified Friday as Rex Heuermann, sources said.
Heuermann was taken into custody and expected to be arraigned later, four senior law enforcement officials briefed on the case told NBC News.
The Suffolk County police and the Suffolk County district attorney are leading the investigation. The suspect is from Massapequa, which is in neighboring Nassau County.

Has a Soros DA let him out on no bail yet?
“captured national attention”
Yet I never heard of it.
The first report I read about this called the killer a Trump supporter in the first paragraph.
I vaguely remember it. IIRC, womens bodies were found among the dunes alongside the main highway on Long Island................
It’s a story local to the New York City area where all the networks and Fox News are located. So it’s big to them and of marginal interest to the rest of the country.
Curious if this will be one of those cold cases solved with genealogical dna.
It’s a big story though. At least a couple of movies made about it.
The Long Island man busted for the notorious Gilgo Beach murders is an architect who calls himself a “troubleshooter” working alongside New York City’s Department of Buildings.

He resembles the late actor Danny Aiello...............
Apparently, he's been on the task force's radar for at least a year.
Likely.
“He had been on the radar of the special Gilgo Beach Homicide Investigation Task Force for at least a year — and was arrested after being linked by DNA, one source said.”
For folks unfamiliar with the area.
Yet I never heard of it.
I guess you missed the "Law & Order- SVU" episodes that were based on the bodies found by the beaches.
He/She has probably been RORed by now.
You are right and that’s because I watched “Law & Order,” but never saw any episodes of “Law & Order - XYZ.” All the XYZs wore me out just thinking about them. There was no cast that could compare to the first seasons of L&O. Well, maybe when they added that really gorgeous assistant DA.
Explains the calls coming from Manhattan.

Coincidence?
I Think Not !
I am not at all familiar with Long Island. I’ve never been there. I always thought it was very densely populated, and I’m amazed someone could dump a body on such a narrow and open stretch of roadway. There’s almost no where to hide, it’s flat as a board and you could be seen from a long ways away by anybody with a pair of binoculars. It doesn’t strike me as ideal place to dump a body, much less 10 bodies. Am I missing something?
