'They're going to fall': 12 California homes evacuated after massive landslide

A massive landslide Saturday afternoon led homes to cave in and crumble in a Southern California neighborhood.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said at least 12 homes were evacuated due to a sliding hillside on Pear Tree Lane in Rolling Hills Estates, a city in Los Angeles County on the northern side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

A video posted by the fire department shows massive damage to the homes.

A house in Rolling Hills Estates on Sunday, July 9, 2023, is severely damaged after a landslide on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County.

Janice Hahn, chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, said some of the homes were pushed off their foundations.

She visited Rolling Hills Estates on Saturday night while the ground was moving. She said she had “never seen anything like” the damage that occurred.

“To think that these homes were intact, you know, yesterday afternoon, and today you can hear the creaking, the cracking, the crumbling,” Hahn said Sunday. “They’re going to fall.”

Yowzers. Living in California, you expect this from a massive quake but tough break for the residents due to this unexpected landslide.

” unexpected ” — That area has a long history of slides. I would say: ‘inevitable” rather than unexpected.

From a different article on this.

A dormant landslide complex has shaped the area for hundreds of thousands of years. It was reactivated 67 years ago and is threatening to destroy homes and infrastructure.

My gosh, and those are super-expensive homes in an exclusive gated community. Gated communities don’t stop quakes and landslides.

67 years ago? These homes look a lot newer than 67 years old. If true, they built on a hillside they knew had a higher than normal landslide risk.

Insurance most likely is subsidized by some federal program so that some middle class schmuck living in a $150,000 home in Terre Haute, Indiana has to chip in to pay for some wokester’s luxury home in California that costs ten times that amount.

This is just up the road from me. The Palos Verdes Peninsula is all crumbling shale that was once sea floor. The nickname suicide rock was given by people trying to climb up the cliff faces as there is no stability.

How can that be when we're told over and over and over that sea levels are at unprecedented levels? /sarc

Birdseye view. It must have happened slowly. Not sure how anyone didn't get hurt otherwise.
