When 45-year-old Victoria realized she was five weeks late and the lines showed as positive on two pregnancy tests, the New Orleans resident dreamed up a plan to get an abortion.
Traveling out of state was the only abortion option for Victoria, who asked CNN to withhold her last name out of fear of backlash against her and her family. Louisiana is one of several states that have essentially banned all abortions.
“It was probably one of the hardest things I’ve had to go through, from the moment of discovering that I was pregnant at age 45 to actually having to have to take time off work, travel across the country, do a meeting with a doctor, and then take the pills and then skedaddle back home and then go to work like nothing had happened,” Victoria told CNN of her experience earlier this year.
Victoria’s story about the distance she traveled and the hardships she endured to get an abortion reflects a wider American reality, where women seeking the procedure must navigate through a patchwork of states with varying levels of access.
The average travel time to an abortion facility more than tripled, from less than 30 minutes to more than an hour and a half, after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, according to a November study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. And for women in Texas and Louisiana, average travel times to the nearest abortion facility were seven hours longer – almost a full workday in travel time to get an abortion.
Victoria says she was grateful she could drop everything and afford to spend $1,000 for the procedure, including same-week airfare with connections both ways and appointment and medication fees.

Exactly!
Prostitution and gambling were legal in Nevada.
Different states, different laws.
That’s what everybody agreed to with the Constitution. Self determination. Local government. The only limits were the Bill of Rights and potential Amendment process.
The problem isn’t with States deciding, even if I don’t morally agree, the problem is with FedGov overreach and Liberals eroding or ignoring the bill of rights. Free Speech and independent thought is just the latest target.
Nope. Women control access to sex. Men have 2 options. Women have at least 8. If the roles were reversed and men were the ones getting pregnant women would say “hey, you have so many choices and you can’t even use one properly? You’re the one who it impacts the most amd you want ME to be more concerned about YOU getting pregnant than you do? Be a man and take responsibility!”
Women always wanted to be like men and not get pregnant from casual sex. So so many methods of birth control were invented, almost all of them, for them, and they still can’t bring themselves to use any of them responsibly.
okay she probably does not think so. so what you say means nothing to someone like Victoria.
OK got you on that
As a general rule both the guy and gal are responcible for the sex and for the death of their child.
And there are really only four birth control options. Barrier, hormonal, spermicide and surgical. Three of the four can be used by men.
The beauty of our county is that states can determine their own standards. And…here is something most of these stories don’t address: The laws in these states could not be passed without a majority supporting them. And that majority includes women.
If young pregnant women don’t care for this, they are free to travel to a place that allows it. Then they can go home and lobby to get their laws changed.
That’s how stuff works.
Wow, she's led a very comfy, sheltered life if that's the hardest thing she's gone through.
Poor baby. Maybe a stint in the Marine Corps would help her out.
My wife was 47 when we had our last one. A give from God.
I’m sure she blamed the man. Its what they do.
Such a victim! Too bad about the murdered baby.
100% agree!
From the article:
“’It was probably one of the hardest things I’ve had to go through, from the moment of discovering that I was pregnant at age 45 to actually having to have to take time off work, travel across the country, do a meeting with a doctor, and then take the pills and then skedaddle back home and then go to work like nothing had happened,’ Victoria told CNN of her experience earlier this year...
“Victoria planned to take a day off to fly across the country and work remotely for two days, which fits her hybrid work situation. She says she was grateful to have a supportive, female boss who showed understanding for why she had to take the unexpected time off.”
Louisiana DOES have the “Safe Haven” law which allows the child to be surrendered in a safe place.

What stands out to me is how (a) this woman saw the pregnancy as a “surprise” (like she didn’t know about human reproductive system facts), (b) she was “supported” by her “female boss” and her mother, a “non-practicing Catholic” (and how this abortion made the relationship between them stronger?), and (c) she wanted to resume her life “and then go to work like nothing had happened.” No, something HAD happened. Abortion makes women like these think they can pretend nothing has happened.
There are dozens of birth control methods available for women. Even, gasp, abstinence. But oh how heroic her struggle to kill her baby. Very sad....
I am talking specific products. There are at least eight specific product types for women. The pill, sponge, cervical cap, iud, a number of implants lasting various periods of time, female condom, etc. Way more options to pick one or more they would prefer. The product men have is only condoms.
People think an abortion makes their problem disappear, and it does ... physically.
What they don't realize until later down the road of life is that that baby never disappeared. It's still in their soul and their heart. When you realize you are pregnant you have a flood of thoughts, even if you don't want to be a mother, of holding, feeding, rocking this child. Sorry if people don't like to hear it but that's how most women feel.
Like it or not, when you abort you are still a mother, for the rest of your days. You're the mother of a dead baby that was eliminated by your orders.
I have an ex-friend who was a sexual libertine who presented as a free spirit sexually out there and bragged about how many men she'd had (as if that's some kind of achievement).
In the wee hours of the evening when she was sufficiently liquored up she would sob over the abortions she had had in the past, the little boys/girls who may have looked like or been like her current living children.
I believe terminating the life of your own child is a wound that never heals, ever.
I call BS.
In 45 years she learned nothing
Five weeks?? This story as presented is B.S.
And guys can use spermicide as well as condoms and sterilization.
So guys have three, two which require only going to the store and women have four, two which require only going to the store.
They are testing a male hormonal treatment that will cause temporary sterility but honestly I would hope guys will be smart enough to stay away from it. Messing with your hormones can be damaging and should be avoided if possible.
