Titan sub debris field: Parts of missing sub's cover found, expert says
BBC ^ | 6.22.2023

Debris has been found in the search for the missing Titan submersible, reportedly including parts of its outside cover. Dive expert David Mearns told the BBC the president of the Explorers Club - which is connected to the diving and rescue community - says the debris includes "a landing frame and a rear cover from the submersible". The US Coast Guard earlier confirmed a "debris field" had been found within the search area. It was located by a remote-controlled underwater search vehicle (ROV) near the wreck of the Titanic. A US Coast Guard news conference is scheduled for 1500 EST (1900 GMT) on Thursday afternoon. The Titan vessel went missing in a remote area of the North Atlantic on Sunday with a four-day oxygen supply for its crew of five.

Some experts have speculated that it could have suffered a catastrophic implosion as a result of a hull failure. The minivan-sized submersible was owned and operated by the private company OceanGate Expeditions. The firm's co-founder, Guillermo Söhnlein, told the BBC that he believes there may have been an "instantaneous implosion" of the craft. "If that's what happened, that's what would have happened four days ago," he said.

They probably thought if it was rated to 1,300 meters with a safety factor of 3. It could just make it to 4,000 meters.

Didn’t happen to find the manifesto in the debris field yet, did they?

Hopefully they’ll understand that “50 year old white guys” are human beings with years of design, development, and engineering experience… and not some convenient demographic to be denigrated by an idiot CEO with more money than brains.

If that ass clown would’ve hired the right people to design that vessel properly, those six people would still be alive.

Don’t be so sure. Iron and bronze and other metals last a long time under the sea. And ceramics. You might find a Titanic toilet down there in a couple of hundred years. That would be awesome.

Their last contact was - from memory - at 3,300 meters, or 10,800 feet.

The Titanic is at 12,500 feet.

Current is usually 1 mph to 2 mph at great depth.

If there are cross currents, good luck with the math!

DOD sensors probably heard it

IIRC they heard the USS Scorpion accident way back when (1968)

It was reported that they were carrying a copy of Saint Greta' tweet from 5 years ago claiming the world was going to end in 5 years. /S

Over 350 bodies were pulled from the North Atlantic in the three months following the sinking of the titanic. Some were buried at a cemetery in Halifax others were buried at sea.

1509 people died the night Titanic sank. From your perspective because time has passed and marine life has consumed them, it is morally acceptable to pillage from those who died.

We will have to agree to disagree on that.

From my understanding they did. However, at that depth in the extreme pressure, it wouldn’t take much to go from a Slater not a Malay to implosion. Sure, the sensor might’ve triggered an alert, but the sub very well could have imploded before they had a chance to even read the words on the display, telling them what it was sensing.

I had a feeling that when they lost communications, which was to be expected, but only for a very short period of time, and never regained it. It was around that time the sub experienced some catastrophic failure.

Jewelry and such on the bodies belongs the families of the bodies. The same stuff on the ocean floor is just stuff on the ocean floor.

Bodies are something very different from wreckage.

People HAVE survived in all those locations and most usually came after it was demonstrated that risk could be mitigated or managed by others.

And to your question, it would be all about the potential benefits. If gold, spices or other treasures were found in North America, someone would've invented SCUBA gear a lot earlier.
