A new study outlines how white people’s migration during and after the Civil War, from the Confederate South to the West, bolstered white supremacy and institutional racism in non-slave states, helping create the vast racial disparities that exist today nationwide.
Five researchers from separate colleges collaborated on the study, called “Confederate Diaspora,” to compile and study census data that tracked the migration to the West of white Americans, including 60,000 former plantation owners. The former Southerners took on local positions of authority, like police officers, clergy and politicians, giving them influence to create a post-Civil War culture that continued to oppress Black people even after slavery had ended.
This results in structural and systemic racism in almost every walk of life today — education, housing, jobs, health care and wealth, among other areas — that continues to hamper progress for Black people, according to a working paper by the National Bureau of Economic Research this month.
The former Confederates “continued to transmit norms to their children and non-Southern neighbors,” the researchers wrote, “shaping racial inequities in labor, housing, and policing.”
Researcher Patrick Testa, an assistant professor of economics at Tulane University in New Orleans, said the impact of the Confederates on other parts of the country was deep and long-lasting.

They voted for
John C. Breckinridge
vice president of United States
The NBC propaganda piece conveniently omits what Lincoln said about “ negroes “ up until 1863, when he used them as a war tactic.
You can’t deviate from the Saint Abraham narrative.
The Civil War was about the WEST.
“Far more tolerant than even when I was a kid..”
It’s not tolerance...it’s cowardice and fear.
Absolutely correct. The North *HATED* black people and at a level far worse than the Southerners did.
People need to read the "black codes" of Northern states. Worst sort of racism and hatred you will ever see.
A lot of ignorant posts to the ignorant article.
“And the “ex-Confederates” are all Democrats.”
A lot of them went to Texas ...
Why? You don't like facts and truth? Believe what you want, but it is quite provable.
From 1868 to 1932, black people voted exclusively Republican. After LBJ created his great vote buying scheme, black people went from being split between the two parties to voting exclusively Democrat. (95% now.)
The big government liberals who like high taxes have always lived in Boston, New York, Washington DC, Chicago, and so forth. Guess where these same liberals live today?
Yes, Liberals live in the North East, and they always have, but back in 1860, the liberals called themselves "Republicans."
Yes we do. I've met some of them and they are fine people.
And therein lies the truth.
Did it happen after George Wallace?
Were the 1960s Democrats segregationists?
Money, and nothing but money.
That's why the Northern controlled congress voted for the permanent slavery amendment in March of 1861. They didn't actually care about slaves, they cared about the money they were making from the South.
The Free Soil movement wanted to prevent the spread of slavery to the territories, but they also did not want free blacks to settle in the territories--these lands were to benefit the whites only. The original program of the Republican Party, before 1861, was essentially the Free Soil program. Many anti-slavery people were not in favor of immediate abolition.
Why did the non-slave-owning whites, who formed the great majority of the white population in the South, support secession? They had no immediate stake in slavery. I think a lot of it had to do with being fed up with Yankee hectoring and hypocrisy.
Absolute garbage.
Keep looking for the true history of racism in this country. Who were the Southern Plantation owners? Rich elites who also controlled the politics of their day. Yes they were and are today racist. They are also STILL Democrats. Self-righteous bigots that want to destroy black American via abortion.
My grandmother knew people that lived during reconstruction. Now that her generation is long gone, history no longer includes their narratives.
There’s no relationship between ex-Confederates and our society as it exists today. Can anyone actually believe that our society is shaped by ex-Confederates? That’s quite a stretch.
It started around 1932 because FDR was for "poor people" and his message appealed greatly to blacks because many of them were poor.
By 1974, most of them were voting Democrat.
Were the 1960s Democrats segregationists?
The Southern ones certainly were according to all the movies i've ever seen, and I suspect the Northern ones were too, but we don't see those kinds of movies.
The Republicans probably also were. Bear in mind, it was liberal (FDR/Truman) appointed courts that overturned all that.
That’s true, and the people who helped African Americans were not Democrats.

They left because their homes were taken from them and could no longer provide comfort and safety to their families.
