The world’s economy relies on Taiwanese semiconductors.

While production sites are being built globally, the world is vulnerable until those go online.

A western market collapse followed by a US dollar collapse and followed by a Chinese invasion of Taiwan would bring the world to its knees overnight.

Expect something like suspension of the constitution.

"I thought the Taiwan government has always considered themselves to be the legitimate government of all China, so nothing really changed."

You could say the same for Russia, and Ukraine, but then there's more opportunities to launder money in Ukraine.

Two topics:

NATO is pledged to defend NATO members, if such a member is attacked.
Ukraine is not in NATO.
Ukraine was attacked.
NATO initiates a proxy war against Russia.
That’s a dangerous precedent.

US policy is that China and Taiwan is one country.
If China moves troops into the region of China known as Taiwan, what will the US reaction be?
I’m guessing that we will initiate a proxy war (or worse) against China.

These are dangerous games to play.
If you have a policy, follow the policy. But the US doesn’t. We are inconsistent, which is never good.

Taiwan is already an independent country. China is a province of Taiwan. The Taiwanese are the true Chinese and true rulers of China.

It’s long past time for the world to recognize that China belongs to Taiwan.

If you are going to be waiting for that - better pack a lunch.

Why would any country become allies with the US?

We do not support Taiwan independence.”

But we fully support the radical “gay” agenda and rigged elections.

China is too vulnerable to attack Taiwan. Remember the dam? And with the valuable island in shambles, not worth the cost.

The Chinese are probably waiting for Biden to disarm Taiwan.

Or they are waiting to finish buying off Tiawan’s leaders, like they have here.

Proxy war against China? Doubtful. Heck, look at the repeated push back on FR for any suggestion to cut off commerce with China. Nope, we’ll see politicians talk but no action. Not a single container ship of Chinese goods will be delayed or turned back. The supply of US dollars to fund China’s actions with Taiwan will be unimpeded by the US.

The way I see it, I think U.S. policy is that China is part of Taiwan.

Officially speaking, the United States has no diplomatic relations with Taiwan since we recognized the PRC as the official government of China: "The [Taiwan Relations] Act was passed by both chambers of Congress and signed by President Carter in 1979 after the breaking of relations between the US and the ROC. Congress rejected the State Department's proposed draft and replaced it with language that has remained in effect since 1979. The TRA is intended to maintain commercial, cultural, and other relations through the unofficial relations in the form of a nonprofit corporation incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia – the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) – without official government representation and without formal diplomatic relations. The Act entered retroactively into force, effective January 1, 1979."

Since 1979, "the United States recognized the PRC and established diplomatic relations with it as the sole legitimate government of China. On the same day, the United States withdrew its recognition of, and terminated diplomatic relations with, the Republic of China as the government of China."

So in essence, our entire relationship with Taiwan appears to be governed through a private non-profit incorporated in Washington D.C., administered as an embassy in all but name.

A somewhat convoluted way to go about recognizing China as part of Taiwan, I would say.

Regardless of who thinks Taiwan is part of China or China is part of Taiwan, the fact remains the Communist dictatorships have many faults, but spotting weakness is not one of them.

A statement like this is like Dean Acheson’s fateful speech in January 1950 that was interpreted by beady-eyed thugs in North Korea, Communist China, and the USSR as a tacit statement that we weren’t going to do anything if they invaded South Korea.

The world is sitting on a powder keg right now. All it takes is a match lit by dumbasses.

And there is no shortage of them inside or outside of the current Administration.

That’s been our policy for 50 years. Officially we are still signed onto “One China”, which means Taiwan is not a country, they are the “disputed province” and we’re do not back their independence. Nixon wrote it. Reagan kept it. Trump kept it. Pretending Biden changed anything by also keeping it is ignoring 50 years of bad policy.

Taiwan are no more the rulers of China than any surviving Romanov would be the ruler of Russia. The world will be a better place if both sides get over it. They’re 2 different countries, legitimate countries, with all the privileges and nuisances that entails.
