Two weekly tasks – going to the grocery store and filling up your gas tanks – are about to get more expensive in Illinois.
By July 1, Illinois will reinstate a 1% tax on grocery purchases and bump up the state’s gas tax another 3.1 cents per gallon.
Last year, Illinois suspended its grocery tax as part of a $46.5 billion state budget plan to combat inflation. The state also paused a plan to raise gas taxes for six months, though that came with a 3.1-cent increase per gallon on New Year’s Day and another 3.1-cent per gallon in July.
State officials estimated last year the suspended grocery store sales tax would save taxpayers up to $400 million. The freeze came at a time when the consumer price index for groceries rose around 7%. That could rise another 4-8% by the end of 2023.
SuperMarketNews.com says Illinois is one of 13 states with a grocery sales tax, though it has the lowest one among states that enforce them. The suspended tax only applied to food and drinks that are meant to be consumed off site, aside from candy, soda and liquor.
As for gas, Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a law in 2019 that doubled the state’s gas tax from 19 cents to 38 cents that year and will lead to a 3.1% rise in the gas tax every year unless otherwise announced. It’s part of an infrastructure plan to help improve the roads.

Well, Illinois, you voted for this, so you better embrace it.
“Politics Of Illinois”
The State of Illinois is a Democratic stronghold and one of the “big three” Democratic states alongside California and New York.
Suffer, my enemy.
That extra money for groceries may——may——upset some people. But they love to be kicked by the Dems. It’s a tradition.
Maybe Illinois will be the new New York-——
AOC on increased NYC crime: “Maybe this has to do with the fact that people aren’t paying their rent & are scared to pay their rent & so they go out & they need to feed their child & they don’t have money so... they feel like they either need to shoplift some bread or go hungry.”
Super heavy EVs still use roads, no? Where's the tax?
Government pension funds can never do with less.

I live in IL and notice all the electric cars have common license plates: They end in EL. In addition to the regular vehicle registration fee of about $150 per year for a car, EVs have to pay an additional $100 bucks. So they are paying something. I’m not sure how the math works out compared to regular gasoline cars.
Enjoy the suck. It’s what you voted for.
Get rid of Cook County and maybe the county adjacent to Saint Louis and IL would be one of the reddest states in the country. Southern IL needs to do what Eastern OR is doing, and maybe join with KY or be its own state.

Welcome to the Joey America Illinois....FJB !
I hear when you take those out of the equation, inflation aint that bad. Right joementia? 😝
Sure, why not? Southern Illinois is already known as Egypt anyway.
This isn’t directed just at you, but everyone who puts out similar comments: There are those of us here who live in Illinois who did not vote for any of this crap. Please don’t lump us in with the idiots who did….
By “you”, you meant the voters of Cook county, of course. As more formerly bred states go purple the same “vote” will happen elsewhere.
People never learn. Dims/pinkos/commies ALWAYS ratchet “the rich” down until everyone is “rich”. All get taxed into oblivion and the crony comrades running the show get the best of everything. Life is good in a commie state if you’re in charge.
I doubt that the majority of Illinois would have voted for this crap, but you have a couple of large populations in the state that probably control most of the votes. I had a friend who lived there who tried to convince me that Illinois was a good place to live. Well, there are a lot of things that would make it so, if they had a lot more Republican votes. Doubting that will happen in my lifetime.
Cook county runs the state. My family left in the 70’s. Good folks should get out if they can.
