DeSantis says Trump a victim of law enforcement 'weaponization' under Biden

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Donald Trump's leading rival for the 2024 GOP nomination, said the decision to charge the former president demonstrated political bias in the Biden Justice Department and it's "weaponization" of its police powers.

Trump was indicted Thursday on federal charges involving conspiracy, obstruction, and taking classified documents.

"The weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society," Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stated Thursday. "We have for years witnessed an uneven application of the law depending upon political affiliation. Why so zealous in pursuing Trump yet so passive about Hillary or Hunter?"

DeSantis said his administration "will bring accountability to the DOJ, excise political bias and end weaponization once and for all."

Other GOP candidates made supportive statements, but not all.

We need you on our side and not the Deep States’ side.

Boy, are you a hypocrite. You have been one of the most vocal RDS haters on Free Republic. And here you are saying "we need you"?

What changed your mind to get you to admit we need DeSantis?

This is a political prosecution.

It is occurring in great part because there was no PUSHBACK from the Republican wing of the Uniparty on the J6 political prisoners.

Ron can make broad statements of the “weaponization” of the Federal gubmint, but without connecting that to the most egregious weaponization that I have ever witnessed which was the incarceration of the J6ers, his words do not resonate with this “only” Trumper as you refer to us.

This is for all the only Trumpers wrongly demanding to know why RDS was quiet about this latest Trump indictment.

As I said, NO! Regardless of the persecution, if anyone should drop out, it should be Trump. Anyway, we really should wait until Tuesday to see the real charges. By the way, we still haven't seen the details from New York either. I absolutely agree that Trump is being persecuted, that the last election was stolen by the censorship, corrupt actions of the FBI and DOJ, and media, and by poor election integrity. But that doesn't mean Trump cannot be challenged for the 2024 ballot. And trashing DeSantis and others just to clear a path for Trump is destructive, loses more votes than it gains.

Sadly, Trump, all of the competing candidates, the Republican party, and all Republican voters are in a pickle, we can't have a fair campaign, we've got a candidate that is challenging and persecuted, that would have lots of issues to address if not persecuted by the Democrats and government. Yes, all this makes it difficult to discuss Trump's personal behavior, his bad hiring choices, his fleeting success in the first term, the failure of those to be lasting (because the were EO instead of binding legislation). His candidacy should be judged on his success and failures, and whether we want four more years of the same. Instead, now we are stuck defending against Democrat persecution.

I notice not a word from Lyn’ Ted. Haven’t checked others, but how many have been silent this afternoon and evening. That is a yes or no question, not one looking for their excuses and excusers.

"But separately everyone must hold Democrats feet to the fire."

LOL!! Rinos just passed Biden's debt ceiling Bill. It's easy for you to say those things because you know it will never happen.

Figures. DeSantis makes a direct statement in regards to this Trump Indictment.

Yet you people want to drag in other issues and criticize DeSantis on something completely different.

Stick to the subject please.

"Why would he do that? It's time to go with the new horse. And that's DeSantis."

As Governor, DeSantis has had the luxury of having a large Republican majority in both Houses of the Florida State Legislature since he's been in office. He also never had to deal with any Democrat majorities in both Houses of Congress on the National level. In January 2013, when he assumed his office in Congress (113th Congress), the House was controlled by Republicans. Senate was controlled by Democrats. In the 114th, and 115th Congress where he served, Republicans held both the House and Senate. DeSantis left his Congressional seat on September 10, 2018. He was gone before the 116th Congress began in January 2019, which is when the Democrats took over the House. DeSantis never served during a Democrat majority in the House, while he served as Representative. He's untested, and the last thing we need is a President-in-Training while the country dies.

I would like him better if he did not have such a sanctimonious attitude.. he could have at the very least called President Trump.. since you all bend your knee to his air of superiority… and they call President Trump a narcissist..

Big thumbs down.. I am not one of his gitmo prisoners

DeSantis is road kill at this point, sometime in the near future you’ll have to deal with reality not fantasy.

Ron DeSantis is a former Federal prosecutor himself — which utterly disqualifies him from ever holding public office, as far as I’m concerned.

We don’t need “accountability” in the DOJ. An Ivy League lawyer like DeSantis who has never worked outside government has no idea what the hell the word “accountability” even means.

How do you get away with violating so many Free Republic policies?

You curse and swear at a fellow FReeper (17) and engage in personal attacks (most replies) and you openly engage in fundraising for non Free Republic purposes (18 and 32). Through winred for crying out loud!

And these nasty retorts on this thread are mild in contrast to your usual brand of hate.

Keep it up. You and others like you do more for Ron DeSantis because of your anger and hostility.

Seems finally learned a lesson here to stand on principle immediately instead of putting his finger in the air and trying to figure out if it would hurt him politically.

Good for the Meatball!
