Black mom-of-four, 35, is killed in front of her son, 9, by neighbor who complained about her children playing outside then shot at her through a door - but police are yet to make arrest because of 'stand your ground' law

Calls are growing for the arrest of a woman accused of shooting dead her mother-of-four neighbor after she complained about the victim's children playing outside.

The children of Ajike 'AJ' Owens were playing in a field near an apartment complex in Ocala, Florida, on Friday when her neighbor 'began yelling at them to get off her land and calling them racial slurs', renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump said.

The children then accidentally left an iPad behind after leaving the field, Crump explained, before going back to fetch it.

But the neighbor, a 58-year-old white woman, who was not named, had taken the iPad and threw it at one of Ms Owens' children, hitting the boy and cracking the screen, the attorney said.

The mother-of-four then marched across the street to speak with the neighbor after hearing of the incident.

The neighbor fired through the door, shooting Ms Owens. She later died at hospital from her injuries.

Police have so far made no arrests following Ms Owen's death. Although Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods has confirmed police know the identity of the shooter, he said authorities are working to determine what role the state's 'stand your ground' law might play in the incident.

Under Florida's 'stand your ground' law, people are essentially permitted to use deadly force if they feel their lives are in danger.

Does the decedent have a criminal record involving violence? That will all be researched.

A likely scenario. The problem is the white lady shooter has only one witness to testify. Herself. While the prosecution has 5-7 or 8 black children and maybe others as witnesses. To lie their asses off and exaggerate.

It is if the person on the other side is in the act of busting down the door.

I suspect that might be why there was no immediate arrest.

You never see them print an article that begins with “White Mom”.

The iPad might be another witness of a sort. Forensic analysis might throw some kinks in the timeline, such as the exact time it was damaged.

But Crump is probably hiring a new witness who saw, or at least heard, it all...

Don't disagree with anything you said. My opinion, shooting someone through a door which hasn't been or isn't being breached is likely to be prosecuted. She has been charged. From the article, the sheriff responded to the delay with Now many of you were struggling to understand why there was not an immediate arrest. The laws here in the state of Florida are clear. Now I may not like them. I may not agree with them. But however, those laws I will follow . What he's referring to as he stated on Fox this am is that the stand your ground law in Florida requires the sheriff (I presume police authorities involved) to determine whether a stand your ground defense if viable prior to charging. A good idea. Only a fool wouldn't have legal counsel immediately, but it means full blown legal consequences and their expense won't be necessary until the sheriff in this case has investigated and determined stand your ground doesn't apply. A big financial saving versus the shooter having to prove it in court, even in a preliminarly hearing. He determined this wasn't a stand your ground case, "simply a killing", aka homoicide. Thus the delay for a couple days in charging manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery and two counts of assault . All said, a legitimate outcome. Another article

BTW she threw skates at the kids. No mention of an ipad. The author completely misstated the stand your ground issue.

It would be nice if they got their facts straight (both the race-baiting Crump and the Yellow Journalism Daily Mail tabloid) but that isn’t completely relevant except for cost, I suppose.

Where. I don’t see the deep pockets here. It’s unlikely the shooter has millions

>I>Now, here, we have a woman who was in her house, and she shot an unarmed woman through her door. All of a sudden, someone isn't considered safe inside her house now? Unless the mother was trying to break into the house, how is this SYG?

You might note my post 87. Unmentioned in this article, actually distorted, the SYG issue was the requirement that the sheriff make a determination if SYG applies in an incident before charging, necessitated a delay while investigating. He determined it doesn't as you suggest, and she has been charged

One possibility is that the journalist has mischaracterized some of the real facts of the case in this article.

Yes, the Daily Mail is a tabloid and pretty much tends to throw things against the wall to see what sticks. It does feel like some critical information is missing here.

But whatever really happened, it’s very sad for those kids to lose their mom. :(

The same place Trayvon Martin's death was parlayed in millions. Lots of contributions via GoFundMe. Lawsuit settlement by the County. Millions of dollars pouring in from pleas for money on prime time leftist networks. Sales of gear in support: everything from t-shirts to commemorative statutes.

The usual stuff which has fueled racist support for Crump and company forever.

Crump isn't stupid, just greedy and without morals.

He saw a chance and worked hard to exploit it. These chances are not common or often.

Was this the first time, or is it a daily occurrence? Has the mother tried in the past to get her kids to stay on their own property and they disobeyed? Is the family house trashed and the neighbors house in nice condition? Is the shooter trash? Is there a pattern of incidents?

I want to know what the history of BOTH women is. Was there a reason for the shooter to be afraid of the victim?

Thank you for the update. The delay in arrest was understandable as police needed some time to determine the correct charges.
