The Guy’s Got Balls’: Meet The Little-Known Governor Who’s Expected To Jump Into The 2024 Presidential Race
Daily Caller ^ | 4 Jun 2023 | Mary Lou Masters

- North Dakota’s two-term Republican Gov. Doug Burgum is expected to announce a run for president in 2024 on Wednesday.

- Burgum is a longtime private-sector businessman who founded multiple businesses before overwhelmingly winning the governorship twice.

- “Doug Burgum does not get into anything he thinks he can’t win,” Jim Poolman, former state legislator, vice chairman of the state’s GOP and state insurance commissioner, told the DCNF. “I think he genuinely believes he can win, and I genuinely believe he can win.”

North Dakota’s governor is among the most popular in the nation, but few outside the state have heard his name. As he prepares to make an expected entrance into the Republican primary for president this week, some of Gov. Doug Burgum’s longtime observers and associates tell the Daily Caller News Foundation that the political outsider is in it to win it, and won’t be deterred by the long odds against him.

Burgum, who has already been filming TV advertisements, will make a “major announcement” on Wednesday in Fargo, North Dakota, where he is expected to launch his presidential campaign, the DCNF previously confirmed. The wealthy private-sector businessman is popular across North Dakota, has a good relationship with the legislature and is very articulate, several political operatives in the state told the DCNF.

Well, that would be a novelty for Republican presidential candidates.

There was Reagan. He was a long time ago.

A governor has the advantage of being able to run against Washington. If he's a relative unknown, the dems haven't had a chance to demonize him, and he gets first crack at defining his own persona. The problem is catching a break to catch the public's attention and have at least a chance of building some momentun. If he's really good and he's a Republican, the media will ignore him as long as they can.

Never underestimate the degree to which presidential nominating contests have become a random walk. Frontrunners collapse with considerable regularity, and longshots do emerge. Bill Clinton wasn't supposed to win. Barack Obama wasn't supposed to win. Donald Trump wasn't supposed to win. Trump was getting 2-3 percent in the polls until he announced that he was going to build a wall and Mexico was going to pay for it. That bumped him up to 13 percent at the time, but he was still not a threat to win the nomination. But there were 16 other candidates splitting the vote every which way and Trump won some early primaries with plurality votes in winner take all states to turn himself into the frontrunner. The media piled on, devoting virtually all the airtime to Trump in the belief that he'd be the easiest pubbie for Hilary to defeat. The dems were beside themselves with glee that they had helped Trump execute a hostile takeover of the GOP. Oopsie.

Could Burgum do to Trump what Trump did to Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and a couple of other A listers (disregarding those others who might have been running for a cabinet seat or to boost an issue or to sell a book or sheer, stupid egotism, and I mean you, George Pataki and Jim Gilmore)? Sure. Possibly, maybe. All it would take is a big Trump gaffe -- ok, ok, Trump fans, I know you think this is impossible -- and an apt Burgum response that goes viral and wins the internet for the week. Suddenly a lot of people would say, "Who is this guy?" and start to think, "He looks plausible." Elections turn on this kind of thing.

The Apotheosis of Howard Dean

Pick your example. I'm still fond of Mike Dukakis's excellent tank ride, his defense of the Willie Horton pardon, and his multi-tiered explanation of his opposition to the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools.

I'll stop there. There are so many to choose from. Fortunately, Donald Trump never makes mistakes. /s

Definitely a RINO. Absolutely a RINO.

But also a total non-factor in the 2024 presidential race, so it makes no difference unless Trump makes another one of his brilliant personnel decisions and selects this chump for VP.

North Dakota governor spends against members of own party in primaries

"Much of the spending appears to be aimed at a conservative faction of state legislators who call themselves the Bastiat Caucus - named for the 19th century French economist and parliamentarian Frederic Bastiat — who have become a thorn in Burgum’s side."

Actually he wouldn’t be that bad-looking if he’d get rid of the grandpa glasses, and maybe pumped up his lips.

Thanks for the home state input, FRiend.
I get so dang tired of being told what to think about candidates by folks who are not first hand sources.
Will definitely keep track of this Governor, with hopes for the future.
Dear Lord, guide our course.

I live in ND.

I have hardly heard a word about him.

I have no reaction either way.

He just doesn't drive headlines that much.

Even his announcement was news to my wife, and I knew this was coming a couple of days ago...

Hmmmm.... that my Friend, prolly isn’t the best sign.
As I told my husband the other day, when yet another entered the race - they have to have found a way to make money by running....
What a mess we are in.

One can make a very strong case that North Dakota doesn’t even exist.

This only makes Trumps primary victory easier.

The only thing that can defeat Trump is the deep swamp and the creatures are working ever so hard.

Because the party elite don’t like winning

Nah, its just that they define winning differently than we do.

Winning for them, is when all their opponents are dead.

“How can he be most popular when so many do not even know his name”

Because he is popular with so many people in his state. Does that help you understand?
