Ottawa County [in western Michigan] becomes ‘constitutional county’

OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – Ottawa County is now a “constitutional county.”

The new designation was approved Tuesday, May 23, by a 9-1 vote of the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners. Commissioner Doug Zylstra was the sole no vote. Commissioner Roger Bergman was absent.

The board heard a little more than five hours of public comment prior to the vote, with a majority of the 102 residents who spoke being opposed to the constitutional county resolution. The passage of the resolution, however, was met with resounding applause.

While the resolution is largely symbolic, the board is now resolved to not to use any funds or resources on enforcing any law or rule that “restricts the rights of any law-abiding citizen affirmed by the United States Constitution,” or aid any state or federal agency infringing or restricting those rights.

The resolution doesn’t outline what constitutes an infringement or restriction of constitutional rights. It also doesn’t point to any specific rules or law -- proposed or otherwise -- that the county will no longer use funds or other resources to enforce.

“As we wrote this resolution to declare Ottawa County to be a constitutional county, we recognized the need to protect not only Second Amendment rights but all constitutional rights,” said Ottawa County Co-Chair Sylvia Rhodea, who introduced the resolution.

“We wish to highlight freedoms and constitutional rights which have been violated over the past few years, as well as those currently at risk due to societal and political pressures.”

She also talked about the COVID-19 pandemic and the due process, parental rights and individual freedoms that were “repeatedly violated” in the county and the state. The new commissioners had campaigned last year on frustrations over the county’s mask mandate in schools.

Nice to hear.

Ho hum. It’s nice, but unneeded. The US Constitution and all of its amendments already applies to every county and parish in the United States. Why is it that some people forget that? (Rhetorical question)

GR, Grand Haven, Holland, Zeeland etc., red as red can get.

Beautiful area as well. Muskegon just to the north, not so much.

By your argument it wasn’t necessary for the Founders to mention self-evident truths.

“majority of the 102 residents who spoke being opposed to the constitutional county resolution”

Wondering if the “residents” have to prove their residency.

Good observation. Probably trucked in a few dozen Ann Arborites.

Haha, I grew up there. When Lyndon Johnson clobbered Goldwater 60-40% nationally back in 1964, Ottawa County went 60-40 for Goldwater.

I was born there, it’s as close as it gets to a conservative paradise.

No. You didn’t understand my clear and declarative statement. You are reading into something that I didn’t write. Learn to read and try again.

This was a model of how to do it. The people who got elected formed a coalition and actually ran as a slate of candidates. I was born and raised in Ottawa and still have many friends and family that live there. It was always a conservative stronghold but over the last few years liberalism has been infecting it. The libs are having a fit over it but the breaking point was COVID. Ottawa was all in with Whitler. It was creepy being up there (I’m in Kentucky) during COVID. It was like living in a police state. Everyone wearing masks. Restaurants taking your names so they could trace you. People morose and angry. Scary stuff. Because of the actions of the health department and other county agencies the slate of candidates was elected and promptly began to carry out their campaign promises.

I expect the regime to send armed enforcers there any day now.
