No deal yet: House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told Republicans during a closed-door meeting Tuesday that they’re "nowhere near" a bipartisan deal with President Joe Biden, according to sources.

52 min ago Republican negotiators say "significant gap" remains on debt ceiling talks From CNN's Kristin Wilson, Haley Talbot, Nicky Robertson and Morgan Rimmer

After another day of negotiations on Capitol Hill, there is still a "significant gap" between House Republicans and the White House on how to resolve the looming debt ceiling deadline, according to the GOP negotiators.

Reps. Garret Graves and Patrick McHenry said that until the president and the White House “recognize that this is a spending problem” those gaps could remain. The Treasury Department has said the country could default as soon as June 1.

Graves said there are no planned meetings tonight with the White House, but the door is open for more talks should the administration want to return to the Capitol. He said Republican negotiators are meeting in Speaker Kevin McCarthy's office to try to come up with other options to cut spending.

McCarthy has said over the week that he needs an agreement to come together by the end of the week in order to meet the “X date” deadline, a date that some in his conference has said is not a hard-and-fast date.

When interest on debt becomes unaffordable, then it becomes harder to find a solution. In fiscal 2023 US Treasury will pay out $586 billion in interest on debt. That is not far from defense budget of $8oo Billion. If inflation continues, interest rates will go even higher.

The Treasury Department has said the country could default as soon as June 1.

I'd prefer May 24, but that's me.

Oh, let us solve the tension and admit what we KNOW will happen: Total abdication by the spineless Republicans. Yes, I know our Speaker will try, but he is facing many enemies, RINOs, Democrats, Democrats, leftists, Democrats, Communists, journalists (who are Democrats, leftists, and Communists rolled into one), the Chinese, and oh yes, DemocRATs.

Kick it right out and let the world KNOW America is still king. America’s inflation will be felt in every corner.

We saw it in 1981 when Carter crashed America and stalled the world.

Screw the obamanites, America still rules, even when it’s drunk and out of control.

Total economic collapse of the West is inevitable by 2030.

Too bad Kissenger won't live to see the destruction he created when Nixon killed the Gold Standard....

Do you think gold standard would have saved United States from losing millions of middle class manufacturing jobs exported to China? I just do not think gold standard would have saved that except keeping inflation down.

The debate should be in the Senate now. The House has a bill.
Why is McCarthy negotiating with himself?

he could go blind with enough of that sort of thing ....

Larry collects 5 trillion a year in income. Larry also has debt that he must pay interest on to the tune of 600 billion a year. Larry is never content to live within his means so he is always borrowing more and more money. But if Larry can’t borrow anymore money then does he have to default on his current debt?

Wake up people.
