Trump Calls 6-Week Abortion Limit ‘Too Harsh’
PJ Media ^ | 05/15/2023 | Matt Margolis

In an interview published on Monday, former President Trump said that a six-week limit on abortion is excessively strict. If you’re thinking this is a curious position for a Republican presidential candidate to take, I suppose I should offer some context. Trump was specifically referring to Florida’s heartbeat bill, which was recently signed into law by… Gov. Ron DeSantis.

When questioned about Florida’s new abortion regulations in an interview with The Messenger, Trump responded by saying that DeSantis had to make decisions based on his own judgment. Trump also suggested that there were doubts about whether DeSantis fully understood the implications of signing the six-week restriction, as some individuals within the pro-life movement believed it was too severe.

“He has to do what he has to do,” Trump said. “If you look at what DeSantis did, a lot of people don’t even know if he knew what he was doing. But he signed six weeks, and many people within the pro-life movement feel that that was too harsh.”

Who was he referring to? Who knows?

DeSantis signed the six-week abortion ban last month, after having previously signed a 15-week ban a year prior. The new law includes exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother. Trump, however, was unwilling to explain exactly what restrictions he’d support, instead saying he was considering all available options, and touted his role in getting Roe v. Wade overturned.

“For 50 years, they’ve been trying to get rid of Roe v Wade. I was able to do it. Nobody else could have done that but me. And I was able to do it [by nominating] three excellent judges on the [sic] Justices of the Supreme Court. And I was able to do that,” Trump explained. “I’m looking at all alternatives.

Correctly, he says that abortion is a state issue.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That’s not what he said. He said that Florida’s 6 week law (a state issue if you like) is bad law.
No, Roe V Wade is struck down. It is now back in the hands of the state. George Bush never got a court, nor his Father with Souter, that could overturn Roe.
It is now in the hands of the States, which is the best you are going to get. You need more than 75% of States (36) to approve a Constitutional amendment, which requires 2/3 of the House and Senate to vote for it and president to sign it before it goes to the States.
Trump appointed 3 of the Justices who were part of the Coalition to overturn Roe. That is fact.
And while I voted against Trump’s opponents twice, and I will vote against his opponent again (Biden) if Trump is GOP’s choice, I am not a fan of Trump. I still define myself as a Reaganite along with the late Senator Dole (who was a budget/deficit hawk and stressed slowing the budget and debt control). We need more of those type GOP today.
The problem with your premise is that Trump was attacking a state for addresses the issue, which is exactly the federalist position you and I hold. Notice Trump didn’t attack any other states that have similar or more restrictive abortion laws, just Desantis. If Trump really didn’t want abortion to be an issue in the primary, all he had to say was that it is now an issue for the states and they are regulating it as they see fit, then move to the next question.
Anyone interested in making abortion a Federal issue and eliminating it completely should be backing Rand Paul's Life At Conception Act.
Trump only won becauxe 55% of White women supported him. That can never happen again with the current tsunami of abortion legislation.
He’s stated his position, that is “exceptions to save the life of the mother or rape.” ... that probably doesn’t agree with a six week ban in his view. He is obviously attacking that... my point in above post was that we shouldn’t nationalize this issue this election and that is as far as I know his position also.
Trust me, he is going to contrast himself with DeSantis in this way, from here on out... they are both Floridians.. that is how it should be.
I’m sure that God would actually prefer an even harsher limit on abortion. But it’s a losing issue for the politically astute.
I wonder what amount of votes the trump campaign thinks its going to gain from the left over this and what weed they were smoking that convinced them of it.
Yes, pandering to women who hold abortion as a “reproductive right” is a necessity for victory.
The winning issue now is what Riley Gaines is fighting for. That should be the focus. Not abortion. Not now. It isn't the time.
Hearing Trump say “Too harsh on abortion” was like hearing Arnold Schwarzenegger saying “Screw Your Freedoms”.
Well, I guess this proves who the real pro-life conservative is and which man doesn’t have core values.
You’re right. What does the painful death of a few more innocent lives in the womb matter if it’s for a good cause?
We can either let the world dictate our votes or remember that God blesses those who seek His Will. The blessings might not be as apparent as who we think should run the country getting elected; they might be in how the People respond to the ever-encroaching evil happening around us, no matter who is in political power.
Riiiiight....and if the Democrats take back the House and they pas, and Biden signs a Federal abortion law, that won't be worse?
“ Trump is smart. Abortion all but sank us. Sorry this is politics. It’s a horrible horrible issue that guarantees women go for creepy Joe.”
**********************************************************************
Sadly (except for the first sentence which definitely is NOT sad), all this is true and something for which we MUST make allowances if we are to prevail in the bigger picture.
