Chancellor David C. Banks said the city is going to make major changes to how reading is taught in order to address the fact that half of city children in grades three through eight are not proficient in reading, according to the report. Banks noted in a recent interview that the city’s reading instruction methods are “fundamentally flawed” and fail to use scientifically proven ways of teaching students to read.
“It’s not your fault. It’s not your child’s fault. It was our fault,” Banks said. “This is the beginning of a massive turnaround.”
The city’s 32 school districts will begin using one of the three curriculums selected by superintendents over the next two years, according to the report. The programs reportedly employ “evidence-supported practices, including phonics — which teaches children how to decode letter sounds — and avoid strategies many reading experts say are flawed, like teaching children to use picture clues to guess words,” the report states.

All of a sudden the methods for teaching reading are not working. People have been reading for how long? What did they do to f*** it up?!
Yeah, it's puzzling. Maybe Randi Weingartner has an answer.
No accountability.
If people in power had any self respect and decency, they would resign out of shame.
We need to get back to the time where the ones that eff things up, are not allowed to remain in power to try to fix their eff up. They don’t deserve to stay in power.
We used to kick their a$$es out after major screwups.
Yes.
This is the beginning of a massive turnaround.
Bullcrap. They are in the business of making slaves.
Half of kids will learn to read almost on their own no matter what the teacher does in class. It is the other half that did not have phonics drilled into them bc Big Textbook companies needed to sell new materials. We are in a swishy private school which is not immune from new teaching trends. Classroom iPads and “sight reading” instead of learning boring, old phonics have led to lines out the door of every reading specialist in town. I’d wager 50% of the boys in my son’s 7th grade class are in outside tutoring.
The usual, nearly useless, half measure here is to go with “blended” learning by combining some phonics with the dyslexia-producing usual crap.
phonics works 100 percent with Spanish
not 100 percent with English; maybe 80 percent
but 80 percent is good, just tell the kids this is a start; with phonics you can sound out most words, and you can deal with the exceptions to the rules as needed
I’ll even break it down further, have the child say “O” and ask what shape is the mouth
why, the mouth is a shape of an “O”
this is the only letter for which this trick works, but it’s a start. Once the child sees that abstract shapes represent sounds, you can start from there
Phonics is the only way to go. Makes learning to read easy.
That’s exactly what I did. Now they would have to find teachers that can teach that. Todays young teachers were not taught these basic skills. Have you seen the way the younger generations hold their pencils? Never taught how to hold it properly.
The New Math??
Amazing how all these other places (everywhere leftards aren’t in control) have figured it out, isn’t it?
I'm quite sure they will. It will be some libtard garbage, you can bet on it. And they will assign books about ghetto life to make it relevant. I doubt those kids will ever turn the pages of Shakespeare, Twain, etc.
I was reading before I ever went to kindergarten. I learned to read from Dr. Seuss books. I was reading cereal boxes, road signs, menus, you name it.
The new standard teaching is Strategic Reading, and I should know, our district has been using it for the last year and a half. It relies on teaching kids the root words of english language- eg; latin and greek, to decode words. I had to do an entire professional workshop on it.
The only objection I have to it is, the implementation of social justice stuff woven into the curriculum.
“It’s not your fault.Yeah it is. Learning to read starts at home at a very, very young age.
I was driving with my young son when he was still in diapers. He was in his car seat looking out the window. He asked, “Daddy, why would that woman rather be naked than wear fur?”
I almost drove off the road. There were some PETA protesters at the mall, and a woman had a sign that said just that.
I said, “Did you read her sign?”
“I don’t know.”
I then pointed to various signs and he was able to read them all. When we got home I had him read different books. He was even able to do pretty well with my old college textbooks. He seemed to be able to read any word he had heard before. But if he hadn’t heard the word before you couldn’t get him to guess what the word was.
We think he must have learned to read by watching Sesame Street.
He’s 33 years old now and not more advanced than others his age. But he still loves to read.
Eye sawz da blac kat.
That's intentional. Especially if they're minority kids.
