Republicans have begun saying things about American schools that not long ago would have struck them as peculiar, even insane. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida has called schools “a cesspool of Marxist indoctrination.” Former secretary of State Mike Pompeo predicts that “teachers’ unions, and the filth that they’re teaching our kids,” will “take this republic down.” Against the backdrop of his party, Donald Trump, complaining about “pink-haired communists teaching our kids” and “Marxist maniacs and lunatics” running our universities, sounds practically calm.
More ominously, at every level of government, Republicans have begun to act on these beliefs. Over the past three years, legislators in 28 states have passed at least 71 bills controlling what teachers and students can say and do at school. A wave of library purges, subject-matter restrictions, and potential legal threats against educators has followed.
Education has become an obsession on the political right, which now sees it as the central battlefield upon which this country’s future will be settled. Schoolhouses are being conscripted into a cataclysmic war in which no compromise is possible — in which a child in a red state will be discouraged from asking questions about sexual identity, or a professor will be barred from exploring the ways in which white supremacy has shaped America today, or a trans athlete will be prohibited from playing sports.
In the spring of 2021, Richard Corcoran delivered a fire-breathing speech at Hillsdale, touting the agenda he had helped implement as education commissioner in Florida. When an audience member asked how he had been able to find common ground with people who disagreed with him, Corcoran responded, “I have fought … There’s no negotiation. I don’t think antifa wants to sit down and have a conversation with me about how can we make this society better.”

Note: Just five short years ago, all of the above three examples would have been considered as laughably radical in classrooms by most people. They are code for:
1. indoctrinating impressionable children into sexual identities before they are sexually mature.
2. Holding that whiteness is the cause of all problems in American history.
3. Men have a right to compete in women's sports by claiming to be women.
Par for the course from Jonathan Chait.
Hey, Teachers? Teach them to read. Teach them to write. Teach them to do math. And STFU about your politics!
I know! Strange concept!
It’s just flat out MEANNESS from Republicans, LOL!

There are two critical nodes
- the high ground of the most elite parts of the education system - the Ivies, Harvard and Yale, etc. Its from there that ideological ideas flow down to the rest of academia, and thus to the larger elite society.
- schools of education, the factories that churn out the personnel of K-12, that spread this to the masses.
So far nothing that’s in play seems to get at either.
You started it, we are just responding by trying to reintroduce logic and reason back into the classroom and keep your groomer hands off our kids and their brains.
“More ominously, at every level of government, Republicans have begun to act on these beliefs”
As opposed to kids being subjected to grooming and America hating communists
bttt
And stop waving your genitals at them!
Columbia is a huge one for indoctrinating the downstream teachers colleges
Is Jonathan Chait a flaming queen?
Strange it took "republican" politicians over SIXTY YEARS to figure it out.
REALLY glad I went to a ONE ROOM school.
Yes, it has been a slow escalation of leftist indoctrination. Now the only thing kids know about George Washington is that he was a slave owner and 13 year old girls have to shower with creeps who claim to be female. Kinda of late I’d say
They could try just teaching the subject at hand like reading, math, and English and not try to throw their perverted sexual and political views into the mix.
Yep. Just had a local teacher/coach arrested for having a ‘recording device’ where it shouldn’t have been.
Deviant jerk!
“Over the past three years, legislators in 28 states have passed at least 71 bills controlling what teachers and students can say and do at school.”
The concept is good - but do they work in reality, with reality being one adult in the classroom, with the door shut?
In other words, do any of these bills provide for classroom monitoring and recording? If not, do they really accomplish anything, other than feeling good by our side?
“Strange it took “republican” politicians over SIXTY YEARS to figure it out. “
So-called ‘conservatives” can look in the mirror for why schools are dysfunctional. They sat on their fat asses and did nothing as leftists took over schoolboards in their neighborhoods, right under their noses.
Elections are held in the spring. Conservatives couldn’t find the energy to go vote in schoolboard elections. They were more interested in counting money and remodeling their kitchens.
And do you know why they are teaching deviancy to our children instead of reading, writing and math? It’s because they know uneducated people are easier to control. They want us to be serfs and drones while they live like royalty.
