No Mow May Program ("help your lawn become more resilient to drought, and reduce emissions from gas-powered lawn equipment")
Springfield Township (PA) ^ | April 26, 2023 | N/A

Posted on 05/07/2023 5:57:53 AM PDT by DoodleBob

APR 26, 2023 GENERAL NEWS

Spearheaded by the Springfield Township Environmental Advisory Commission, the Board of Commissioners have approved a pilot program for No Mow May for up to 25 residences in the Township. Mowing your lawn less helps to increase the abundance and diversity of wildlife, including bees and other pollinators. By participating in No Mow May, residents can let grass grow uncut for the entire month, allowing a habitat to form for early season pollinators. This is particularly important in urban and suburban areas where floral resources are often limited. In addition to benefiting pollinators, reducing mowing frequency will save water, help your lawn become more resilient to drought, and reduce emissions from gas-powered lawn equipment.

Learn more about No Mow May

REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis, with participation limited to the first 25 households who register (PLEASE READ PARTICIPANT RULES BELOW). Sign up by clicking on the link below. No Mow May signs will be available for all participating households. An EAC member will be in contact to review participation rules and coordinate a No Mow Sign pickup. The registration is filled. Thank you for your interest.

Participant Rules

Pilot participants must adhere to the following guidelines:

Provide your name and address to be shared with the Chief of Police and the Fire Marshal. This list will be used in case of complaints from neighbors.

All lawns would need to be cut back to regular length by the end of the first weekend after May ends, by end of day Sunday June, 4.

The curb strip grass between the street and the sidewalk must be maintained at a mowed height, where a curb strip exists.

Along the perimeter of the lawn next to the sidewalk or street if you have no sidewalk, the grass must be maintained at a mowed height for the width of a lawn mower.

A sign identifying participation must be prominently displayed on the lawn. The sign will be provided by the EAC and should be returned to the EAC once the program ends.

Educate neighbors on the benefits of No Mow May and why you are participating.

Q: If mowing is so bad for the environment, why not abolish local mowing regulations entirely?

A: Because the municipality will lose one lever for controlling the populace.

Imagine the work you will have getting 10 inch grass cleaned up. It will all flop over, not dry out, clog the mower, and take forever to get under control.

Those is stupid.

Eventually there will be fines for mowing the grass. Power mowers will be heavily taxed. It will become illegal to buy gas for them.

Sure. my HOA would go along with that! 🙄
Plus think of all the extra plastic bags and landfill space needed to dispose of clippings when you finally mow. no mulching mower would handle grass that long…

Tall grass? Dummmmmb. Tall grass is a home to rodents, snakes and all sorts of insects. During a drought it represents more of a fire hazard. And unless you want to use herbicides, tall grass promotes weed growth and unwanted trees.

The worst thing about it is it identifies a person as a leftist, someone too lazy to do anything at all and not really care about their living standards, just their devices, govt checks and drugs.

We have a small pasture we mow twice a year, when the grass is about 10 - 12 inches high. It’s a bearcat to mow, and the mice running from the mower is entertainment. There are numerous volunteer tree saplings also. And yes, snakes.

No Mow August, No Mow November, No Mow December, No Mow January, No Mow February, No Mow March.

Some lunatics up the street have one of these yard signs.

They mow half the lawn and let rest grow.

They even put stakes in the ground to rope off the no mow area.

Insanity.
