Former President Donald Trump received an endorsement from Representative Lance Gooden just after the Texas Republican held a meeting with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
A press release shared to Gooden's Twitter account on Tuesday said that the congressman had made the decision to endorse Trump "today, after careful consideration and a positive meeting" with the former president's potential 2024 GOP presidential primary rival DeSantis.
The Florida governor, who has not officially announced his candidacy but widely believed to be preparing to challenge Trump, was in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday for a "meet-and-greet" event with multiple lawmakers, according to Miami ABC affiliate WPLG.
"I met with Governor DeSantis," Gooden said in a statement. "And while he has done commendable work in Florida, there is no doubt in my mind that [former] President Trump is the only leader who can save America from the leftist onslaught we are currently facing."
"I wholeheartedly endorse [former] President Donald J. Trump for the 2024 presidential election and vow to fight alongside him to reclaim our country from the leftist forces that threaten to destroy it," he added.
Newsweek has reached out via email to the office of DeSantis for comment.
Trump, who faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in New York and multiple criminal investigations that could lead to more charges, has been steadily gaining Republican endorsements.
Meanwhile, Republicans publicly declaring their support for DeSantis have come at a far slower pace, despite the governor seemingly ramping up efforts to promote his unofficial campaign.
Lawmakers from DeSantis' home state have largely been flocking toward Trump, with U.S. Representative John Rutherford on Tuesday becoming the latest member of Congress from Florida to issue

That's pretty much where I am at
Me too.
Yup.
I pray to God the Congressman is right. To accomplish what he acknowledges is necessary, Trump will have to get some advisors smarter than Ivanka and Jared.
Me too but until the pub show some sign that they understand the way dems do elections...no pub will win the presidential election. any dem will win.
Trump will have to get some advisors smarter than Ivanka and Jared.
That should not be too hard
> “And while he has done commendable work in Florida .....”
Not sure that soundbites written by Karl Fatass Rove for DeSantis translate to “commendable” work.
Looking at DeSantis and his “work”, it is easy to see Rove writing issue narratives that make conservatives go ga-ga. But looking at actual accomplishments, only some are impressive, but they’re not his work. They are the work of very astute Floridians who get nods from the Governor’s office. IOW any conservative leaning FL Governor could be swapped out for DeSantis and the “aura of accomplishment” would be the same.
DeSantis is overrated, very. If he stayed in FL and stayed focused on conservatives there, he could be a contender in 2028. But the Bush Camp set by Rove want Trump supporters peeled off to DeSantis now, not later, why?
The Bush-Rove Syndicate is actually the face of the stereotypic country club republican with tentacles clasping large swaths of federal budgetary earmarks (War Machine) and a huge stake in international banking.
The Bush syndicate’s tentacles such as The Carlyle Group have access to Federal Reserve liquidity facilities. They access cheap, if not free, money, borrowing at ~0% and buying Treasuries paying them 4%. A hundred billion in Treasuries at 4% is $4 billion. That level of revenue is able to pay a lot of human infrastructure, consultants, campaigns, corporate agents, all translating to power to have one’s way.
Trump stands in the way of all that. Trump raises political funds in direct ways from supporters whereas Bush-Rove grab funds by indebting the US Treasury and ultimately the US taxpayer.
I pray to God the Congressman is right. To accomplish what he acknowledges is necessary, Trump will have to get some advisors smarter than Ivanka and Jared.Ignorance is bliss. Your hatred and ignorance aside:
Desantis is falling down a very bad hole. REP. Greg Stuebe , R-Florida said that TRUMP was the first call he got after he fell off his roof, and Ron has NEVER called him EVER and NEVER answered his CONGRESSIONAL letters!! NOT GOOD, Ron!
If all that were true the previous Republican admins in Florida would have had similar results. Funny how we pick and choose who we give credit to using different standards. Ron has provided good leadership to the state and worked closely with the legislature. I hope he stays there as governor and finishes his term. His agenda has been quickly moved while he has been in office. It is a shame Pres Trump did not receive that same level of support by congress, which was Republican controlled for his first several years in office.
It does seem to be at the all or nothing point doesn’t it?
brandon is running wild with unconstitutional acts. Regulating, shaping and spending without any control or even over sight. The republicrats have self-castrated becoming ever more worthless.
This administration hatefully thumbs its nose at any hint of restraint or regulation of their actions. The IG testimony yesterday revealing obstruction of investigation by state of their wild giveaways to the taliban is only one example. doj simply don’t care about rule of law. They have gone full rogue.
If a card player wins a tournament, he/she is usually called a star, brilliant, gamechanger etc.
But when investigators find a group has veen buying winning hands to stack their “winner” with, the fans get confused, ignore that new fact, conclude “it’s just politics”, “DeSantis has enemies” etc.
DeSantis has these backers:
Paul Singer
Ken Griffin
Paul Ryan
Jeb Bush/Karl Rove
There are many many more. They control elections same as Demicrats.
They all want to keep DeSantis in FL
Well, Lewis, that was a shining example of your own blissful ignorance. But, do carry on.
