Fox News and Dominion Voting Systems said Tuesday that they have reached a settlement agreement just moments before opening arguments were set to begin.
The deal ends a monthslong legal battle over whether the media company had defamed the voting machine maker when they broadcast election conspiracy theories in 2020.
The terms of the settlement were not immediately available.
Dominion sued Fox News in 2021, demanding $1.6 billion in damages. They said the network defamed it when it broadcast baseless claims that it was tied to the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, that it paid kickbacks to politicians and that its machines “rigged” the 2020 presidential election by flipping millions of votes for Trump to Biden.
The settlement came on the day trial was scheduled to begin; late Sunday, the court delayed the conclusion of jury selection and opening arguments to Tuesday morning, leading to speculation that settlement talks could be taking place behind closed doors. The announcement follows a bruising week for Fox News. During pretrial conference hearings, Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis sanctioned them for withholding evidence, admonished them for not being straightforward with him, and said he was considering appointing a special master to investigate possible legal misconduct by the attorneys. He said he would allow Dominion to conduct an additional deposition with Rupert Murdoch at Fox’s expense.
Davis also ruled that Fox lawyers could not use newsworthiness as a legal defense, limiting their possible trial strategies.
Few defamation suits make it this far, but legal experts say the case — and the extraordinary claims and evidence fueling it — was unique.
Legal filings made thousands of pages of emails, text messages, and other communications public, revealing that Fox News journalists, hosts, and executives knew the bogus claims about the election were false, even as the network continued to put them on air.
You can pretty accurately predict the outcome of most any trial simply by saying where it is going to be held.
Washington DC? If you are against the left, you are *GUILTY* and the facts don't matter.
Portland? *GUILTY*
San FranSicko? *GUILTY*
Austin? *GUILTY*
You get the picture, or at least you ought to get the picture.
History of election interference. Got some proof?
Delusional.
Discovery takes place before you get to trial. And discovery is what has led to the public learning about Fox News talking heads acknowledging in private that folks like Sidney Powell and Rudy Giuliani were batshit crazy while still having them on the air to make their claims
To be honest I had stopped watching Fox News so I didn’t even get my news about DVS from Fox. What exactly did Fox say because as far as I knew FNC was campaigning against Trump. Good riddance and I hope it bankrupts them. Sadly Dominion gets to continue its cheating.
Collaborators.
Yep, was hoping that discovery would show some interesting emails.
Game set match for the election cheaters.
Dominion is the US Government
They still have exposure with Smartmatic.
Firstly, how would any of those people saying such a thing know? It took years for us to finally see some of the evidence about the methods used to rig the vote in 2020.
Texts and emails are just opinions, and they weren't public.
So how about this? Point to an example of a Fox employee saying something liable? The only way I see any liability against this shitty corrupt little company is if an actual employee of Fox defamed them on air.
What their guests say doesn't count, because those are the opinions of the guests.
So, wouldn't FOX have attorneys working with the insurance company ones right along?
Say, FOX had a 1/2 billion policy, so would be willing to part with 387 million to settle.
They were guaranteed going to lose in court when the case was filed in Looney toon Liberal Delaware.
Same thing would happen if the case was filed in San Fransisco, Washington DC, Portland, Austin and a whole host of looney liberal venues.
Has nothing to do with the truth.
Rudy and the Kraken lawyer were his lawyers. Like Cohen, fools. Like other Trump hires, fools. I fully understand the lawsuit. I said Fox would lose Bigly. They did. Fox listened to Trump surrogates (and maybe Trump himself.) It was all fake, unprovable and false. $800 million. Your beliefs will never be proven. Sad.
You should look at what happened in Michigan 1 year ago this weekend. Rudy, the pillow guy and other Trump surrogates took over the Michigan Republican convention and got some real loons and fools on the ballot. The surrogates were believed by the faithful. They all got crushed. Bigly. Abortion is now legal in Michigan, unions have power they lost decades ago and their Governor could be the next President - and she is as bad as Cuomo. It’s past time to keep hoping on the Kraken.
Fox News isn't part of the conservative movement.
Fox News is a product that's sold to the conservative movement.
“could not use newsworthiness as a legal defense”
Didn’t they use the standard escape clauses like “some say” “if true”?
I agree. My house always had FNC on since it came out in the late 90s (?) I quit the bass turds in 2015 and haven’t turned them on once since that time. There is no 24 hour news channels on in my house anymore and I only watch the local news bozos when we’ve got severe weather in the area. I’m fed up with all of those propagandists. They are not on our side and I don’t think they ever were.
