IN GENTLENESS THERE IS STRENGTH
The parents were devastated. Their young adopted daughter had died in an unusual accident. She suffocated when the drawstring on the hood of her jacket became caught in a playground slide. It was later learned their child was not the first to die this way. Design flaws in both the hood and the slide made this an accident waiting to happen. Some people might have viewed this tragedy as an opportunity to sue the two major corporations for a lucrative settlement. The parents, however, refused. In an interview, the mother said she would have seen any remuneration as "blood money". She and her husband believed the leaders of the two companies never intended to harm her child or any other child. Instead of a lawsuit, the parents appealed to the clothing and slide manufacturers to correct the design flaws which had led to the death of their daughter. Both companies took immediate action. Today the parents are leaders in a campaign to promote child safety, and the companies involved have contributed substantially toward their cause. It is not always wrong to sue. There are times when it is the prudent thing to do. It seems, however, that our society has become increasingly litigious, suing without discretion for profit and personal gain. In light of today’s litigious climate, one cannot help but be moved by the choice of these parents not to sue. Instead they chose a "higher ground", earning not only the willing cooperation of both companies, but strong allies in their campaign to promote child safety as well. We might say they took the "pure, peaceable and gentle way" described in the third chapter of James in the Christian scriptures (James 3:17) as opposed to the adversarial way offered them via the courts. An ancient Native American saying reads, "In gentleness there is great strength". Dag Hammarskjold, former Secretary General to the United Nations and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, put it this way, "Nothing is so strong as gentleness, and nothing so gentle as true strength". In the end, the gentle, peaceable way of these parents demonstrated the greater strength and wisdom. CAPT Jane F. Vieira, CHC, USN

Our Rotten Military Promotion System
https://www.realcleardefense.com/articles/2023/04/15/our_rotten_military_promotion_system_893993.html
A Marine sniper serving during the Afghanistan evacuation recently gave testimony to the House Foreign Affairs Committee on the Afghanistan evacuation. His pain was palpable. A revelation worth examining was his identification of the possible suicide bomber prior to the incident. After the sniper, Sgt Vargas-Andrews, confirmed the target with multiple agencies, he asked his Battalion Commander, LtCol Whited, for permission to shoot. The answer from Whited, one in which Vargas-Andrews said he’ll never forget, was, “I don’t know.”Not found in the media or Congressional testimony is that Whited, a former peer of mine, corroborated this version of events in his formal statement for the military’s investigation. When speaking to the investigating officer, General Curtis, on 5 October 2021, Whited stated, “[We had] a description of a person of interest. We watched him for hours… It bothers me still that we lost track of him, and never heard anything back from higher about him.”The obvious indecision in Kabul on 26 August 2021 has a much deeper undercurrent. Since World War II, the American military promotion system hasn’t evolved with the needs of today’s challenging security environment. Current military professionals are conditioned, above all else, to please superiors for continued advancement. Said another way, when promotion is the mission, it will always be more important than troop welfare. “I don’t know” is another way of saying, “The risk to force isn’t as great as the risk to my career.”
