A large explosion and fire broke out at South Fork Dairy in Dimmitt, Texas on Monday night.

The cause is still unknown. Reports say the explosion engulfed multiple structures.

The smoke from the explosion could be seen from as much as 80 miles away.

According to Texas authorities, more than 18,000 cattle died during the explosion.

“There’s some that survived, there’s some that are probably injured to the point where they’ll have to be destroyed,” according to Castro County Sheriff Sal Rivera.

While its cause is still under investigation through the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office and others, including the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Rivera noted that the initial explosion may have been caused by a machinery malfunction.

The South Fork Dairy was further noted to be a recent development in the community, having been in operation for less than a year in the area and employing around 60 people. This is the first instance of a fire or explosion at the business.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

I have to assume a building like that has numerous ventilation systems in place and is automated so no one can forget to turn on a fan and have too much methane build up.

Food resources all across the country continue to be destroyed...

Nothing to worry about:
The FBI will increase its surveillance and infiltration of those evil Catholic churches...

Of course the problem with automated systems no one has to remember to do is they’re more likely for nobody to remember to check. We live in an imperfect world, bolts fall out, just because nobody has to turn a fan on every day doesn’t mean somebody shouldn’t verify the fan is WORKING every day.

And if the problem is dust instead of methane, that same fan might be stirring it up.

Yeah. I was just using their example. To me, as a professional QA guy, when I see “facility less than a year old” what I read is “probably didn’t have any experienced employees who know not to blindly trust automation”. Preventative maintenance matters, especially when you’re dealing with really nasty stuff like manure, methane, and grain dust. Don’t notice one this isn’t working, bad things happen.

that would be terrible if that were the case, and I would think a real setback for the methane-capture-use burgeoning industry possibly

This on top of the deadly fire that killed many, many chickens.

I guess accumulated dust explosion from grain/feed bins could do the trick.

This. The black smoke billowing up says that an organic combustible was burning after the boom boom. Methane nor natural gas nor propane nor fertilizer would do this.

Farmers should be very careful how they store grains.

With that many cows they most likely had a methane digestor power generation unit on site.

They can be dangerous.

They use explosive machinery to milk cows?

Really?

I’m throwing down the BS flag on that one.

There are too many of food plants etc explosions and fires to be purely random accidents. I feel so sorry for the poor cows and the people involved.

I hope the Sheriff is not prevented from finding the truth. I know Fire Marshals are good at their job of finding the causes of fires. A determined and trained arsonist may be able to cover their tracks though.

” What do they use on a dairy that could cause that kind of explosion?”

Natural gas or propane used for pasteurization. Just a guess.
