A damaging batch of documents leaked from the Pentagon appears to have been initially shared on the video game chat platform Discord in an effort to win an argument about the war in Ukraine, according to open-source intelligence analysts.
The bizarre provenance of the leak may seem unusual but it is far from the first time that a dispute between gamers has sparked an intelligence breach, with the overlapping communities causing problems for military and gaming platforms alike.
The existence of the leaked cache was exposed as documents showing estimated casualties in the Bakhmut theatre of battle began circulating on public social networks last week.

I don’t think you quite know what you’re talking about or how prevalent gaming is among both military members and government employees.
This leak almost certainly came from a junior military member trying to settle some pissant argument.
That headline?
Seriously?
Babylon Bee level comedy!!
Oh? Whu-uhttt?
A lot of forums have been used as back-end storage places. It’s very off the grid.
The scenario you present and the gamer theory are not inherently mutually exclusive.
It has A LOT of truth to it...
Competitive idiots forgetting their clearances to “win”.
Boasting about what you do and the equipment you operate to try and get laid is another large source of inappropriate information sharing...
BWAHAHAHAHAHA
“Pentagon leak traced to video game chat group users arguing over war in Ukraine”
once again, sounds like a Babylon Bee headline ... but NOOOO, reality becomes more difficult to spoof every day ...
I briefly worked for DoD about 30 years ago. My first guess is that employees were gaming during working hours.
I never saw that happen.
Now Hillary went to great lengths to put classified information on a non-secure server - so there may be other ways it could have happened.
The country’s on the wrong track...Thanks for sharing scrabble..
Yes, exactly. And when the facts were assembled and they were ready to go public they would be talking about "serious consequences" and "thorough investigation." They haven't said a peep along those lines.
That's the part that I find suspicious not that gaming websites were involved.
That is something I hadn't heard and it makes sense. Not familiar with KillNet.
It's not the details I find suspicious, BobL, it's the Biden admin response.
“The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) referred the leak to the Department of Justice (DOJ) this week.”
Maybe the DOD should have just contacted the Washington Compost. They seem to have found the guy.
B.S. story...
It was leaked intentionally in order to let the public know we have U.S. troops fighting Russia because we are losing people.
So next time you hear of some military accident it should give you pause if that is what really happened.
They want troops over there fighting Russia.
Oceania has ALWAYS been at war with EastAsia.
Can't say 'map' these days without mentioning Trump!
Presuming this story has a shred of truth to it.
If true, it is an indicator of a total collapse of all security protocols.
Yeah, it sounds phony.
“World of Tanks” is a game whose developer (Wargaming) is Russian.
“War Thunder” is a game whose developer (Gaijin Entertainment) is also Russian. Coincidence?
The message boards for both WT and WOT can be cesspools, yet they might be open-source intel gold to those paying attention.
