What Happens If DeSantis Takes a Pass on 2024? (are they getting nervous?)
New York Intelligencer ^ | 4/9/23 | Ed Kilgore

Posted on 04/10/2023 5:32:16 AM PDT by cotton1706

Trump wins a coronation. The alternative scenario for a 2024 without Ron was nicely articulated in late March by the Bulwark’s Jonathan V. Last:

The next thing that happens is Trump pops higher in both national and early-state polls. That’s because Trump is the second choice of about half of the voters who support DeSantis. Which means that you’d expect Trump to almost immediately add >10 points to his poll numbers, putting him close to the 60 percent mark nationally …

The Republican establishment, which has been pushing DeSantis relentlessly for two years, would freak the eff out.

Last figures that, after casting about wildly for another champion, Establishment Republicans would soon resign themselves to another Trump nomination since “conservative and Republican elites would believe that this really was the last time they’d have to bend over for Trump”:

They would assume that he can’t win and that the actuarial charts will prevent a 2028 Trump campaign. They’d tell themselves that January 7, 2025 will be the first day of the rest of their lives and all they have to do is gut out the Trumpism for a few more months.

Elites aside, a Trump candidacy without a formidable opponent like DeSantis might fall somewhere between his 2016 campaign, when he steadily gained strength against divided opposition, and his unopposed 2020 candidacy as an incumbent. Yes, the expectations game might work against Trump in this scenario, but it’s not as if he couldn’t make a comeback. His entire 2024 candidacy represents a comeback from two impeachments, a general-election defeat, a failed insurrection, and whatever prosecutors can pin on him between now and the end of the 2024 election cycle.

The 'Republican' oligarchs know that NONE of their other pantywaist candidates can beat Trump.

Nikki McRomBush, Kristi McRomBush, Tim McRomBush, Mike McRomBush and Chris McRomBush (Christie or Sununu) will ALL fail.

They're counting on an indictment/conviction to save them from having Trump once again as the Republican nominee. But it's not happening and they know it.

They'll once again be faced with the inevitable choice: get on board with Trump or join the Democrats. And we all know what choice they will make.

DeSantis needs to sit out 2024 and wait until 2028. He is NOT ready.

Trump and only Trump in ’24.

Stupid meaningless article.

Only Trump threatens the corrupt establishment.

Get 100% behind Trump.

Everything else is chasing laser dots.

Stop chasing laser dots.

I personally think DeSantis has a better chance to win the general election than Trump, but not by much. The media will villify DeSantis hard if he won the republican nominaation.

But the fact is, eh wont win the nomination. The writing is clearly on the wall.

I agree with the premise or question posed by the article. I think DeSantis would make himself a bit of the hero with the Trump corner of the Republican party by bowing out and letting Trump have his redemption (re)election. It would serve him well in the next election. It’s very likely he wont get nominated anyway. It sure is a huge hill to try to climb.

get on board with Trump or join the Democrats...

The political system in the US today consists of two parties - Patriot America-First Party or the Uniparty.

All the 'McRomBush's you speak of are of the latter. And, I'd include Ron McRomBush.

It doesn’t matter if he “takes a pass” or not. DeSantis will not be the Republican nominee and the NeverTrumpers will be defeated once again.
None of this matters either.
The election, as ALL elections going forward will be won or lost based on the Republicans’ ability to stop Democrat/communist voter fraud.
No one wants what the rodents are selling. The ONLY way they can take office is by cheating.
Stop the cheating and Trump wins by 10 points easily.
There is reason to be optimistic about the Republicans’ fight against Democrat/communist voter fraud.
In 2022, with TWO years to fix any problems they had with cheating, the rodents STILL lost enough seats to lose the House.

Whining from Surender Monkeys aside, this is a as Crime Boss Joey The Sniff would say, :A big F&&Kin’ deal.”

The fact that Republicans have gained Super Majorities in N.C. and Wisconsin plus the recapture of Virginia’s top offices will overcome the loss of Pennsylvania.

Yep. The tag line on the announcement will be "If Republicans prefer him, he must be worse than Trump!"

These RINOs think that we are all stupid out here in fly-over country. I for one was taught that when a person fights against something that they shouldn’t be fighting against, it tells you that person is trying to hide something. And it’s usually something that will get them in deep doodoo. The Republicans fighting against Trump tells me that they are trying to hide something and they know Trump can expose them. I think we all know and understand this. I wish the Republicans would just come out and admit it so we could all just stop the charade because it’s becoming very tiresome.

DeSantis needs to stick to FLORIDA, just like all the rest for now. The bigger fight is local, he has far more impact there. President Trump will be the only one who can fight the constant barrage. The left needs to be rooted out, and thrown out of the bureaucratic apparatus in Government. Only Trump can do that. This is a shot at fixing things. DeSantis must work locally, Trump nationally.

I personally think DeSantis has a better chance to win the general election than Trump, but not by much.

Due to massive voter fraud, both have the same chance.

Articles like this are fundamentally delusional.

They think Trump voters are GOP voters.

Trump won in 2016 by attracting Obama voters in the important three states of WI, MI and TX. They are not GOP voters. They are anti Swamp voters.

Trump did not win the 2016 popular vote. The GOP and GOPe by default do not represent the majority view of the US — unless and only unless they reject Swampism. Any incumbent of 8+ years in political office is Swamp. No Exceptions. Policy is irrelevant. Worshipping at the altar of ideology is willful acceptance of Swamp manipulation.

Only Trump is the figure that opposes it.

The Republican oligarchs know that NONE of their other pantywaist candidates can beat Trump.

And they're hurting because the "system" is ReadyforRomney™. The Democrats will have a large House majority (+30 or greater) and will control the Senate, and they're fine with a Romney-Bush-Rubio in the White House to keep the con alive for a bit longer.

a general-election defeat, a failed insurrection,
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Nice analysis, except for the above! I would not refer to the “general election defeat” without mention of the steal. And to characterize the J6 affair as a failed insurrection is not accurate because, pertaining to at least 98% of the people on the Mall and on Capitol Hill that day, it was neither organized nor violent.
