In March, Ingrid Weisse, her husband and two young sons were aboard Alaska Airlines 889 from Portland, Ore., on a flight home to Hawaii when the Boeing 737 began buffeting so fiercely that it felt as if the plane would shake itself apart.
Alaska Airlines acknowledged "unexpected turbulence" on the flight. But researchers say there's evidence that a particularly unpredictable type known as "clear-air turbulence" is becoming more frequent, says Paul Williams, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Reading in England.
The reason for this increase in clear-air turbulence is climate change, Williams says. As global temperatures increase due to rising levels of greenhouse emissions such as carbon dioxide, the jet stream is experiencing more wind shear.
"Since satellites began observing in 1979, the amount of wind shear has grown by 15%" in the jet stream, he says, referring to a study he co-authored in 2019.
In a follow-up study using climate model simulations, Williams and colleagues predicted that clear-air turbulence in the middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere could triple in the next three to six decades, depending on future greenhouse emissions.

They never stop.
I never thought I’d actually live in the Twilight Zone.
Egads. Another day, another climate scare.
The distance between “climate researchers” and real science is increasing at an exponential rate.
Today’s dose of climate fear porn is an example.
A bigger dose of pure bullsh...er...bull Obama existeth not.
Is there any question it is a religion. One rough flight is proof of Global Weather, but record snows in CA is not proof the models are wrong.
“ The reason for this increase in clear-air turbulence is climate change”
Climate change, it can do everything!
Rough ride from climate change?? Fools! Probably more due to pilots “suddenly” dropping dead in the cockpit. Buh-bye.
Could they fly a little higher?
So this is the new excuse for poor aeronautical engineering? Math is raciss...or something?
Doesn’t matter cause soon only government officials will be able to fly in planes.
The exact same thing happened to us on Western Airlines between Honolulu and Anchorage — in 1980.
These people need to get a grip.
Air turbulence has been around since beginning of time. Used to be pilots reviewed wx reports and forecasts before takeoff to review frontal areas and other wx phenomenen but not anymore, ergo, they fly into turbulence that may have been forecast but failed to plan ahead.
Gee, it couldn’t be due to the fact that the airlines don’t want to spend the extra money to ensure the cargo...er, passengers...a smoother, safer ride...?
How many flights at that day and time now versus 10, 20, 50 or 100 years ago? Compare old and new reports in that context. I bet there is no difference or simply no way to know if there is a difference.
Further, what change are the suggesting? Windier, warmer or colder, different makeup of the air? Maybe Gaea is just upset and this is "her" trying to get attention? BTW, is Gaea "her" nowadays?
This is about money, not climate change.
Note to the airlines: Not my problem, though. I refuse to fly. Going on 20 years now. I’m cool with it.
Note also that Deep State’s FAA and pet Congress are just fine and dandy with airlines bouncing people around to save money.
“researchers say” — Hey, man we found what we were looking for.
