Biden admin moving forward with light bulb bans in coming weeks

LED light bulbs 'currently cost more than incandescent bulbs and are inferior,' consumer groups said in letter to U.S. Department of Energy

The Biden administration is preparing to implement a sweeping nationwide ban on commonly used light bulbs as part of its energy efficiency and climate agenda.

The regulations, which prohibit retailers from selling incandescent light bulbs, were finalized by the Department of Energy (DOE) in April 2022 and are slated to go into effect on Aug. 1, 2023. The DOE will begin full enforcement of the ban on that date, but it has already urged retailers to begin transitioning away from the light bulb type and, in recent months, begun issuing warning notices to companies.

"The lighting industry is already embracing more energy efficient products, and this measure will accelerate progress to deliver the best products to American consumers and build a better and brighter future," Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said last year.

According to the DOE announcement, the regulations will save consumers an estimated $3 billion per year on utility bills and cut carbon emissions by 222 million metric tons over the next three decades.

Under the rules, incandescent and similar halogen light bulbs will be prohibited in favor of light-emitting diode, or LED, alternatives. While U.S. households have increasingly switched to LED light bulbs since 2015, fewer than half of households reported using mostly or exclusively LEDs, according to the most recent results from the Residential Energy Consumption Survey.

Overall, 47% use mostly or only LEDs, 15% use mostly incandescent or halogens, and 12% use mostly or all compact fluorescent (CFL), with another 26% reporting no predominant bulb type, the federal data showed. In December, the DOE introduced separate rules banning CFL bulbs, paving the way for LEDs to be the only legal light bulbs to purchase.

I buy regular light bulbs when I see them at estate sales.

Hopefully they were made in the USA. The ones made in Asia after shifting manufacture from the USA are inferior, and don't last long. Decades ago I removed a light bulb from my parents' front porch because it was an antique light from about 1900, had a Marconi-Edison label and was still working almost 70 years later. Unfortunately my mom threw it out along with my comic books and baseball cards. The Chinese bulbs burn out within a year.

The Communists said their gripe with capitalism was who owned the means of production. The Democrats’ gripe is that the means of production exist at all.

As you note, private sector work from home is mostly legit. You are monitored to be productive. You must produce. And some go getters do this all by themselves, they like working.

Gov’t sector work from home is mostly scam. With the FedGuv being the worst.

“Then in the following years LEDs will also be banned in the name of some fake ideology or other.”

Exactly!

Considering how incans burn out and have the elements break, I would never depend on them as a heater.

Yes and those gubmint losers are going to ruin it for the rest of us. Notice how many headlines you see now about making remote workers come to the office or companies ending work from home. Another thing the government has RUINED.

If I turn on every light in my kitchen I get 1100 watts worth of light, for 165 watts worth of electricity and unwanted heat, for over 18,000 lumens of the bright and clear daylight spectrum.

Since my kitchen is large but a simple old house kitchen, it blows people away to see every station and area so lit up, they like it.

That’s the thing.

Government managed at the behest of big business. General Electric, Philips, and Sylvania could no longer compete in the incandescent market. With high upstart costs for smaller companies to re-tool...... GE, Philips, and Sylvania lobbied the cleptocrats in Congress to mandate new "green" lightbulbs.

The gubermint was only too happy to oblige. However, there was a loophole and incandescent lightbulbs for 'other' or 'industrial' use were still allowed. But, we can't allow the serfs to do that..............

Government managed and mandated lightbulbs.....but it was GE, Philips, and Sylvania that put them up to it....all so they could have higher margins with the expressed support of the government.

I believe there are LED versions of nearly every automotive bulb. At least, every one I see in the auto parts stores.

Good to know. Thanks!!!

All that voltage dropped must be dissipated as heat...............

So exactly how efficient are led’s if they have to dissipate heat. Very bright lEDs dissipate a lot of heat.

We have been sold a perfect example but application has been something different.

Yawn...
Just another “freedom” taken away from the serfs...
NBD!
There will be the usual grumbling and then it will go down the memory hole...

The consummate efficiency of the communists now ruling us has to be applauded...
No stone is being left unturned in the fields of freedom & liberty...

It is only going to get worse and there is almost zero probability that any election will put a stop to it and restore at least a few of our lost freedoms & liberties...

And the dirty secret of ‘CO2 warming the planet’ is CO2 follows temperature rise it does not cause it. And it’s in the ice and geologic records. They’re suppressing info.

When the oceans, lakes and land all warm they release stored CO2 which went into solution with cooling. It’s like opening a warm soda vs. a cold soda. The cold keeps CO2 in solution. The warm releases it.
