The EU is sending one million artillery shells to Ukraine at the eye-watering price of two billion Euros, meanwhile the United Kingdom has confirmed it would be sending depleted uranium anti-tank rounds along with the main battle tanks it is donating to the country.
A long-anticipated arms procurement deal by EU members-plus-Norway through the European Defence Agency to procure and send one million 155mm artillery rounds [pictured, above] to Ukraine has been agreed, ending months of discussion.
The €2 billion ($2.15 billion) price tag will be divided in two tranches, the EU said, with the first billion used to compensate European Union nations for releasing shells from their own military stocks, with an aim to send these within two months. The second round of funding will be paid to armaments factories in European nations to make new shells for shipment.

The EU’s ambition is to have this delivery completed within 12 months, but there are questions over whether Europe’s armaments factories can ramp up production quickly enough to meet that target. Extra shells could have been bought from outside the European Union, but France has insisted on a buy-European policy to protect European industry.

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) has called on the British government to “introduce an immediate moratorium” on its use of ammunition using depleted uranium.
It also argues the government should support a global ban on its use in conventional weapons, while helping to clean up areas where they have been used.
Some countries, like Belgium and Costa Rica, have already banned the use of uranium in conventional ammunition.
On its website, the CND says: “Its use has a devastating impact on civilians caught up in conflicts across the world.”
The International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons was based in Manchester but has since moved to Berlin.
Sure Chad, when those bombs and shells blow up stuff it creates dust smoke and debris that is breathed by troops from both sides, and all those civilians whose houses schools and businesses are shelled. Forever unless their towns are cleaned up as toxic sites.
Once that dust is inhaled ( or otherwise ingested in water) it does a job on the human body. Perhaps forever. Pretty graphic studies of the deformed infants born in the Iraqi towns where these weapons were used,
Want a job cleaning up some the sites in the US where these weapons were used? EPA wont’t even touch some of them.
They DID, now the component of the 120mm “ dart” AT round uses “ Staballoy”.
Using DU rounds effectively “salts” the ground, making it unihabitable. Vaporized DU on the soil causes hideous birth defects, and its destructive power is blown across miles.
Much like the Roman army did to undesirable conquered lands, salting the fields insured they become Uninhabitable.
This tells me the Ukies have no intention of regaining any areas where DU munitions will be used…..primarily the ethnic Russian provinces. They lost the Donbass and know it.
Much like Iraq and Afghanistan where DU munitions were used, the ground is poisoned, birth defects and lung cancers.
The only bright spot is sitting on the DU rounds during transport/ storage…it causes rectal cancer, ask the Italian Army….and our VA.
A bad thing could happen to a very long tunnel.
Depleted uranium is just uranium with far less U-235, is it not?
Your father in law KGB, right?
“The US has used them for many years, hasn’t it?”
That makes it honorable?
They self sharpen as they enter the armor, not mushroom like other metals. That comes from the Spall. They can penetrate a shitload of steel.
Putin hasn’t met A 10’s yet.
“Why don’t nations just say they support Ukraine and keep quiet about what aid they’re sending, when and how much?”
Do you think those nations could be trying to escalate the war?
Isn’t infrastructure fair game now?
I don’t know. They might think that announcing their military aid before it’s sent will discourage Russia, but Putin, at least acts as if any increased capability in Ukraine’s war machine will be met and exceeded.
Just don’t see any reason to announce in advance, on and on, what aid is going to Ukraine.
DU in firearms projectiles is actually a real environmental pollutant and hazard to human health that remains in the area where used.
The US has used them for many years, hasn’t it?
Yes, because the rules don't apply to us.
The article explains that depleted uranium is not particularly dangerous as a radioactive source. It is dangerous for its chemical properties, similar to lead.
It’s sounds scary though. So the Kremlin’s fellow travelers will use it to gaslight the uninformed. What the Russians are really upset about is it is much more cost effective and efficient way to destroy old Russian garbage tanks/vehicles with one of these rounds than with something like a Javelin.
We better watch out. The Russians might poison more people in Britain or send another flagship cruiser to the bottom of the Black Sea.
The US has used DU bullets and artillery rounds for years. It’s not just for tank-fired projectiles. The A10 fires depleted uranium rounds, and do many of our artillery platforms.
It’s not radioactive, just extremely dense - making it perfect for anti-armor applications.
But I suppose getting the word “uranium” into the article will send all the useful idiots into a frenzy, much like “assault rifle”.
It basically has similar toxicity to lead. But the worldwide public at large sees the word ‘uranium’ and freaks out.
“Why don’t nations just say they support Ukraine and keep quiet about what aid they’re sending, when and how much?”
Whadda ya think this is? WWII where loose lips sink ships? It’s 2023, now it’s bloviate loudly and carry a twig.

Here is what our VA says.
“VA has been conducting a surveillance program for Gulf War Veterans exposed to DU through “friendly fire” incidents for more than 25 years. Some Veterans enrolled in this program have ongoing DU exposure resulting from DU fragments embedded in their bodies. It is important to note that, to date, no health effects related to DU exposure have been found. Nevertheless, the potential for long-term effects remains, and this group continues to be under surveillance.”
