Looking back on War crimes tribunals, even after WW2, it convinced me that this was a sham. They should have allowed the German people to hold any trials against German soldiers. Or Italians to put to trial Italians. It set an example of the some yet unformed body claiming sovereignty over past actions of others.
How do we feel about allowing the Vietnamese or the North Koreans to publicly sentence and execute captured Americans, and holding the high ground? Nuremburg trials were simply a way to grab attention and tell the world that “he who has the power makes the rules”. Which the US had then, and will lose eventually. Then WE will have no “right to gripe” since we did it to others.
Imagine GW Bush being held for war crimes? The only thing stopping that from happening is, we have bigger guns. Even more so for the absolute war crimes of Obama and Clinton in Libya, Syria and other places during the 2009-2016 periods.

The war crimes trials after WW2 were a necessary measure due to some of the monstrous atrocities committed by the Germans, Japanese, Italians, and Vichy French.
Sadly, none of the Russians ever faced a tribunal for their crimes against Poland, Finland, Ukraine, etc. Etc. Etc.
