Regulators in the San Francisco Bay Area voted Wednesday to eliminate the sale and installation of natural gas-powered furnaces and water heaters over eight years beginning in 2027, ostensibly to limit air pollution.
The vote was the latest step taken by left-wing jurisdictions against natural gas — a convenient and relatively clean-burning source of fuel.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported (original links):
Bay Area regulators voted Wednesday to adopt rules to phase out the sale and installation of natural-gas furnaces and water heaters over the next eight years, one of the most ambitious plans in the country to replace gas appliances with electric alternatives.
The rules, approved by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, are meant to reduce air pollution from some of the worst home-appliance offenders. The main pollutants targeted are nitrogen oxides, or NOx, which can cause acid rain and smog as well as increase risk for asthma and other respiratory diseases.
People will be able to repair their gas appliances if they break — but the rules take effect when existing gas-powered furnaces or water heaters no longer work and need to be replaced. New construction will also be required to have zero-NOx — effectively, electric — furnaces and water heaters.

Heat exchangers wouldn’t typically crack unless they’re cast iron. More likely to see one burn through.
As for replacing one, it can be done, though you’d have to tear deep into the unit; like open heart surgery. Still, with photos, and an organized space to lay out all the parts as you remove them, reassembly should be just a matter of time and care. Biggest problem is getting it out where you can work on it, and putting it back when you’re done.
I think the control that runs the exhaust fan continues past the end of combustion either friends on a timer, a temperature sensor, or other detector. I’ve had one run on like that quite some time ago, and I recall a bad sensor of some kind had failed to tell the controller that it was OK to shut the fan off.
Good luck with your balky fan.
Well, they first have to put out their heads.
Follow the money. That’s gonna be where electric furnace and water heater manufacturers will be involved with payoffs to this board of ‘regulators.’
Finally, this, along with EV charging stations for the masses and in-home installations will be the catastrophic blow to their electric grid. Couldn’t happen to a better group of zealots.
You’re right. They have an unhealthy fascination with feces in more ways than one!
That is the only thing that can possibly explain this staggering stupidity — totalitarian control of everything people do.
It’s time to BAN the San Francisco Bay area from spreading its insanity. Forbid any residents from relocating anywhere in the US. Wall it off, with only a couple of trade routes open.
Thirty years ago it was Queer Central; now every other mental aberration has consumed its society.
C'mon, man! You know, like anything else, they'll exempt themselves!
