Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) called for gender-neutral bathrooms in schools on Thursday, in response to a town hall question from a transgender Virginia teenager.
“Look at me. I am a transgender man,” Niko, a 17-year-old from Arlington, Va., said at a CNN town hall. “Do you really think that the girls in my high school would feel comfortable sharing a restroom with me?”
Youngkin, who issued a series of restrictive guidelines to Virginia schools last fall related to transgender students, said on Thursday that it was important to accommodate students.
“That’s why I have said many, many times, we just need extra bathrooms in schools,” he said. “We need gender-neutral bathrooms and so people can use the bathroom that they, in fact, are comfortable with.”
Youngkin’s guidelines would require transgender students to participate in activities and use school facilities that align with the sex they were assigned at birth. It would also make it more difficult for students to change their name or gender presentation at school.
However, the suggestion that transgender students can use gender-neutral bathrooms in response to such restrictions faces legal challenges elsewhere in the country.
Several transgender students in Oklahoma are suing the state over such a policy, which required them to use “a single-occupancy restroom or changing room” if they declined to use facilities matching their sex assigned at birth under a new law.
Youngkin generally doubled down on several of his controversial education policies at the town hall, including barring transgender athletes from participating in sports that match their gender identity and forbidding the instruction of “inherently divisive concepts, including critical race theory,” which is an academic framework that examines the influence of racism on institutions.
Youngkin has lost his cajones to make a reasonable decision.
Thank you very much for all the information.
Something I think about a lot is conservatives need to avoid being put in extreme corners by over reacting to the left.
For example, a lot of this transgenderism is a trend affecting vulnerable adolescents.
However, in denying the reality of that transgenderism, we shouldn’t become ignorant that people are born every day with just about every variation we can think of.
There are people born with both sets of genitals, genitals that stay inside the body, hormonal imbalances, etc. And I have no desire to criticize or mistreat those folks or any other transgenders for that matter, even pretenders.
Likewise this applies to things like not hating any race (based on race) just because they have radical and otherwise undesirable members.
There’s a lot of provoking of conservatives going on and too many on our side think it’s cool to just talk trash in response, which I admit is very tempting.
I admit my own Italian cultural background tells me that many in our society just need to be told to “F off” rather than be reasoned with. But that’s when they cross the line and get in your face.
Just my thoughts.
That was a pathetic exchange. What a weenie.
This would have been my answer:
“Look, the clear fact that you have chosen to have your mental illness remain untreated doesn’t affect the way funds will be allocated for our school facilities. Next question?”
You know that it wouldn’t be used only for trans. Anyone can use it. I would prefer to use a private bathroom over a communal one.
The family bathrooms I’ve been in are nice and spacious. Also great for wheelchairs.
He is now running around afraid to speak truth to people who are mentally off. Why should the rest of us change our traditions, our beliefs and our thought just so these people “feel” accepted? So their feelings won’t be hurt or so they can be accommodated for whatever they want? It is ridiculous.
Right. They’re really all-purpose bathrooms.
Need to read a bit more.
I think he’s trying to sound accommodating while at the same time holding on his most important aspects, and “gender-neutral” BRs are not new. So in a way, he is doing nothing for the mental defectives.
What most do not seem to realize is that it does not stop with letting these creeps into the bathrooms. It extends into locker rooms and showers. So 13 year girls have to take showers with some little scumbag who says he is a girl. It has already begun to happen.
Transgender gender-neutral and woke people have lost their mind the Covid shut down fried what little brain they had left.
Reality isn’t for everyone the rest go nuts.
Read my other posts on this thread. I go into detail there.
The ACTH stimulation test detects the presence of NCCAH. NCCAH has 108 variants. If you google non-classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia and gender dysphoria, you will see case studies and pictures of what happens to females with my daughter’s variant.
Agreed.
In my child’s case, the masculinizing happened naturally, driven by the endocrine system during puberty. No medical intervention or surgeries were required.
I’d rather they use single-use gender-neutral bathrooms than expose themselves in women’s restrooms. The headline is misleading.
You are correct. Of course the knee-jerk brigade will be in full response mode.
Yes.
My youngest, who has Asbergers and got bullied a lot when he was younger, used to use the single person bathroom at the nurse’s office. He didn’t want to risk getting beat up in the bathroom.
Single person bathrooms are a good idea for kids like him, too.
In a perfect world, there would be a lot more single use ones. The bathroom is not supposed to be a social meeting place. Do what you need to do and vacate.
Even in the good schools, there are kids selling “inventory” (presumably because the kids have more money) in the bathrooms, too.
My son wants no part of that and it makes him uncomfortable to see it. If you tell, it’s your word versus them and you get jumped. He shares info with trusted counselors, they do a surprise locker search later in the day/week, and they keep him out of it.
