A new Lewis Center for Church Leadership report compares characteristics of disaffiliating churches with those remaining in The United Methodist Church. The report draws on data from the denomination’s General Council on Finance and Administration and other sources. Among the findings is that disaffiliating churches are more likely to have a male pastor and to have a majority white membership. What’s not so apparent are the numbers. The departing churches are the large, thriving, conservative churches, so the departure is magnified in member numbers leaving.
I have personal knowledge of black churches leaving for moral reasons.
As an ordained elder I strongly support those churches standing up for morality and Biblical authority. The US and EU UMC leadership has long been under demonic possession.
My local UMC church is taking a vote next week. All “professing” members (full members) have the opportunity to show up and vote. I’ll be voting for disaffiliation from the UMC. If the 2/3rds threshold is reached we will then discuss affiliation with the Global Methodist Church.
I think that statement about white/black disaffilation is a case of using statistics to lie.
Does the author know there are more white people in America than black?
This seems to be a problem now days.
Those churches leaving are doing so because they do not believe that unrepentant gays and lesbians (like sinners of any kind) should be leading the church (like lesbian bishop Karen Oliveto).
I was a Certified Lay Speaker headed well down the track to Ordination. After our previous Pastor retired due to a health issue, the Lay Leader and I ran the church and led services for over a year. When a new liberal Pastor was appointed and I spoke out about her aligning with RMN and other left wing organizations within the UMC, she pulled my letter of support and the DS removed me.
They used my pending divorce as an excuse. Funny though, they didn’t seem to have an issue with the multitude of lesbians that became part of the church leadership after I left. There are some great congregations and individuals within the UMC, but the organization as a whole will wither and die.
The fact twisting drivel I read about in your post is enough is enough to stop me from reading further.
“The provision allowing this form of exit — Paragraph 2553 of the Book of Discipline — expires at the end of 2023.”
Oh, so NOW they’re going to adhere tenaciously to the Book of Discipline on this point when they ignored its requirements regarding sexuality and other critical issues for decades? What abject hypocrites.
Churches should ignore this requirement, and shove the hundreds of other violations in the UMC’s faces when they object.
Did you realize that God destroyed Sodom because it was inhospitable to visitors?
Why did all the lesbians join, after lib female pastor appointed? Is pastor lesbian?
She was open about her liberalism, even went to the Church Council to fly the “gay pride” flag from the Church building. That was right before I got booted. I have no evidence to say she was a lesbian, but she came from a very liberal church in Manhattan.
In Washington, DC in the areas north of the White House are many small parks that have equestrian statues of Yankee generals. Those parks were well-maintained when I lived in DC at the dawn of the Reagan era . Today, those parks have trash, graffiti, winos, and unkempt shrubberies. The same neighborhoods have beautiful old churches but many fly the LGBTQP flag. It is sickening to see such decay.
So it’s sexist and racist. I wonder if there’s some spin here.
The writer is a fool. It is not about race and sex. It is about God’s Word: the Bible. The departing churches seek to adhere to the Word of God. The remaining churches do not. God woke, Go broke applies to the UMC.
It really is a shame. The Congregation that I was a member of had been in existence since the early 1800s. The attendance has gotten so poor that they no longer have a full time appointed Pastor, they’ve had to combine with another local congregation and hold service in the Sanctuary every other Sunday. The Pastor who I was referring to moved on to a wealthy liberal congregation in Connecticut.
I realize it’s early and we all need another cup o’ joe. Read my entire comment again and I think you’ll get it.
