Alex Murdaugh, a once-wealthy and powerful South Carolina attorney on trial for allegedly shooting his wife and son, took the stand Thursday, testifying he had no part in the grisly double murder and blaming an addiction to painkillers for his erratic behavior in front of friends and law enforcement officials.
"I did not shoot my wife or my son any time — ever," he said of Maggie, 52, and Paul, 22, who had been gunned down in June 2021.
Murdaugh admitted he had lied several times to authorities about his whereabouts the night of the shootings.
"I lied about being down there, and I'm so sorry that I did," he said, adding that he was overly "paranoid" and claimed attorneys from his family's law firm urged him not to say a word without representation present.
Murdaugh also apologized to his son Buster and relatives for lying about the last time he saw Maggie and Paul and said once he started lying, he could not stop.
Prosecutors have argued that Murdaugh, who belongs to a powerful family that has dominated the legal landscape for more than a century, killed his family members in a desperate attempt to hide his financial crimes, which they said included swindling clients out of ten million dollars.
The mother and son were killed on June 7, 2021, near the kennels on the family's sprawling, 1,772-acre Colleton County hunting estate.
They were found in a pool of their own blood, Paul dying from two shotgun blasts and Murdaugh's wife being killed by 5 rifle shots.
The prosecution, which rested its case on Friday, also pointed to footage found on Paul Murdaugh's phone that was taken minutes before he died in which multiple witnesses testified hearing Alec Murdaugh's voice despite him claiming he was nowhere near the scene.

This guy is a real piece of work. Total complete psychopath. Talking about his little son PaPa. Blew his guts out with a shotgun. Of course it was the Oxy.
The Netflix special (3 episodes so far) was quite good.
” I was on drugs...I dont remember”
Hes in trouble.
Dead giveaway that he's lying.
"Not one, at no time, evah...did I kill my wife and son. Not even once, I tell you. On my mother's grave...and the Bible"
"And I never beat my wife with baseball bat either. Never. No matter what anyone might say."
Who really cares about this soap opera? There are MANY more important stories.

You are so right. You can’t believe a word he says. He thinks crying will help him.
Just shoot him now.
I will be watching the Netflix special as soon as I get a chance.
That's generally a 99% indication of guilt. If you are innocent, you don't need to lie about where you were.
I’ve been following also, to the degree I can. I don’t see the physical evidence to convict, but his financial crimes and drug addiction ($50k a WEEK??) paint him to be a serious bottom dweller. He sounds too folksy on the stand today and I’m betting it isn’t selling to the jury. Before today I thought he had a shot at winning. As of today, I’m thinking he gone.
“He’s in trouble.”

He’s so arrogant he doesn’t know that.
I lived in a community where we all knew who the power people were. Even growing up their kids never had to pay a price when they got in trouble. A phone call from their parents was enough to right people.
But this guy has such a bad history and appears to have robbed from everyone to manage his debts unsuccessfully. His credibility is about zero but when you know people in high places that won't matter much.
“I did not shoot my wife or my son any time — ever,”
Hmm, methinks the lawyer doth protest too much.
Murdaugh lives in the county just north of me. We’ve been following this case for years. Murdaugh is a bad guy and had a lot of enemies. It’s quite possible he didn’t kill his wife and son.
What I enjoy is that Murdaugh has an authentic, native SC accent. He’s uses all the little phrases and slang.
If you get down to Walterboro to attend the trial, be sure to go to Big Dukes BBQ buffet.

One lie after another has finally caught up with him.
These kind of generational small town fiefdoms are more than just a soap opera. They’re little dictatorships with all kinds of unpleasantness and even murders perpetuated over many years to keep them going. And stuff like this is how they all end, then the generations of stories start coming out. And there’s so many of them scattered around the country.
Court TV has been broadcasting from Fat Jack’s. Jack was interviewed on their show.
Yes, he does protest, and he cries constantly.
