I believe he was. I had a family member tell me that wasn’t true - he just didn’t like Bibi.... I never changed my mind about him.
As as a Southerner growing up in rural Georgia, I heard Southern Baptists say, "the Jews killed our Savior." I will not single the Baptists out because many of Methodists and the Church of Christ congregations in the rural South believed the same. Jimmy Carter was steeped in these old timey bigoted beliefs. In those times they would have hardly recognized their own bigotry because to them, everyone understood and believed that way.
And yet most of the Protestant religions to a degree were Anti-Semetic, but forgot that Jesus was himself born a Jew. I always found the HYPOCRISY Amazing.
I grew up Episcopalian but left a long time ago. Found out I have a few drops of jewish blood and now just was soon self identify as such.
I knew a Liberal woman who said the Catholics crucified Jesus.
I find that an absolutely incredible thing for you to say. While historical chrstianity is indeed historically anti-Semitic and blames the Jews for killing Chrst, American Fundamentalist Protestantism (very much including Southern Baptists) believe in the Calvinist doctrine of "penal substitution" (considered a heresy by historical chrstianity). This means they believe G-d did it and there's nobody to be mad at. Furthermore in an entire lifetime in the Bible Belt I have never heard and anti-Semitic sermon from any of them, and many of them have been extremely philo-Semitic and pro-Israel (certainly more so than the more classical forms of chrstianity).
I really find your claim hard to believe. Even if they were anti-Semitic the crucifixion would have had nothing to do with it, since they believe that Christ experiencing the equivalent of an eternity in hell on behalf of every human being was absolutely essential to the salvation of a single person.
That isn’t Biblical. We’re all guilty of the Messiah’s death.
And was something else behind Carter’s antisemitic, anti-Israel rhetoric of later years? It has a very leftist tinge to it, which is steeped in atheism.
