A billionaire venture capitalist and partner at Sequoia Capital has blasted San Francisco’s seedy, drug-addled downtown — lambasting the city’s Democrat leadership for leaving them “zombie zones.”
“It’s a strange city that bans plastic straws but permits plastic needles. Yet that’s San Francisco today,” Michael Moritz, 68, seethed in a fiery op-ed published in the Financial Times on Wednesday.
“Between 2020 and 2022, 1,985 people here have died from drug overdoses compared to 1,143 from Covid-19,” he added.
The former journalist-turned-investor said rampant and unchecked drug use has turned the City by the Bay into a “zombie” land.
“Fentanyl, the synthetic drug that is 50 times more powerful than and a fraction of the cost of heroin, has turned many blocks of the city into zombie zones,” Moritz wrote.
Moritz provided a lengthy list of the issues plaguing San Francisco, stemming from the drug and homelessness problem — including “the highest commercial office vacancy rates of any big city in the US” and “a public school system whose enrollment has fallen and which has only 55 percent English proficiency and 46 percent maths proficiency.”

A person who helped create the situation we are in is now looked at as the voice of common sense. This is an artificial plan, create conflict and then take leadership over both sides of the issue. Move the right into accepting a person of the left, shift the political center slightly more left.

My family used to live in SF when I attended kindergarten through the 2nd grade. My parents let me walk to and from school back then - the difference between SF in the early 70s and now is like a before-and-after shot in a zombie apocalypse movie.
Shh, there many Freepers who feel so much compassion for the drug addled garbage that have invaded many cities. Not so much for the tax payers who have to deal with invasion of the human garbage.
Are there any Republicans in San Francisco?
Just an observation, for SF and many other cities, with overwhelmingly liberal/Democrat people in charge of these places, there’s no way they can blame the problems of their cities on Republicans or conservatives.
These Democrat run cities have such overwhelming Democrat and liberal majorities, that they are able to implement liberal policies without any compromise or opposition to their plans. And then we see the results.
California is making billions from the fed grants for drug-addled zombie zones.
The drug-addled zombie zone problem won’t stop until the money does.
