Newly released video captured the moments before a knife-wielding double amputee was fatally shot by police in Los Angeles and shows him stabbing a man in front of a gas station.

Huntington Park on Monday released video of Anthony Lowe, 36, sitting in his wheelchair on Jan. 26 before attacking a pedestrian with a 12-inch butcher knife near a Shell station.

The man, who is seen staggering, was critically wounded with a collapsed lung but is recovering.

Police also released the 911 call made by the victim, who identified himself as Ramiro.

“I got stabbed in the heart right now,” he says, moaning in pain.

CCW holders can’t shoot someone who might throw a knife at them, neither should cops be allowed that privilege.

That is a very important point. Any power and authority our public servants have is delegated to them by We the People. If We the People get in trouble for shooting a fleeing criminal, our public servants should as well. Contrariwise, if our public servants are empowered to shoot a fleeing criminal, We the People must be as well.

Such is not the case right now, and it is a problem.

“Actually I did not say what I would do, I only said the cops used excessive force”

Please tell us what you would have done.

“CCW holders can’t shoot someone who might throw a knife at them, neither should cops be allowed that privilege.”

A good case can be made that someone making motions to throw a knife at someone else is a deadly threat and therefore they can be shot legally to protect life or to protect from great bodily harm.

Saint Anthony brought his death on himself by resisting arrest using deadly force.

And there’s a reason they simply didn’t stay out of his reach and wait?

Then it is acceptable to shoot someone threatening to throw a baseball bat at you?

Obviously I wasn't there so I can't say what I would have done. I can say, based on what I saw, I would not have shot him.
If the cops had only shouting, tasers, and guns they were poorly prepared and possibly poorly trained.

“He already stabbed one man and is threating to throw a large knife at the officers. You are one of those that say shoot him in the arm.”

No, get behind cover or out-distance him until you can bring a less-lethal weapon (tazer, bean-bag rounds) into play.

Boy I’m glad you are not a field police supervisor.

“Is it me, or would this have been a solid opportunity for the use of a taser?”

If you look at the photo in the article (which is larger and shows more detail, it appears the officer in the center has a Taser in the firing position. Note that his service pistol still appears to be in it's holster on his right side.

Whether or not the Taser was actually fired, misfired or failed to immobilize the knife wielder is not clear in the article.

The officer to the left appears to be the one who likely fired the lethal rounds; as he is in the process of deploying his service pistol. The man with the knife (which does not appear to be a “butcher knife” to me ...more like a large hunting knife) is clearly facing the officers (not hobbling away) and has his arm clearly in a position where he is intending to throw the knife.

Given the officers close proximity to a violent individual who had already stabbed/critically injured someone (for no apparent reason); the man's continued belligerence and failure to comply w/lawful orders; the officer's duty to protect the general public and the fact they had to make a life or death decision in a fraction of a second; it appears to me to be a case of justifiable homicide.

That doesn't make me happy and I don't envy anyone who might be placed in a similar situation by the actions of someone else.

Threatening an assault is not justification to kill someone.

The legality of such a self defense action would be dependent on an imminent deadly threat to your life or a danger of great physical harm.

If we have a double amputee on the streets with issues like these, our social welfare systems must be a complete failure. Couldn’t anybody get this poor guy some help before it came to this?

I know there’s no helping some people and I’m armchair quarterbacking, but I can’t help but sorry for the guy.

The reason would be, the guy needed killing. What good would jail, or home confinement done for the next victim of the attemped murderer?
