Top GOP ‘Moderate’ Endorses Debt Ceiling Hostage Taking
Talkingpointsmemo.com ^ | 2/6/23 | Josh Marshall

Posted on 02/07/2023 3:02:16 AM PST by cotton1706

We’ve mentioned before that the one clean way to avoid a national debt default is a discharge petition in which a small number (at least 6) of House Republicans join with Democrats to force a vote on a clean debt ceiling. Once that happens the two sides can get down to negotiating a budget. But today, Don Bacon (R-NE) – Washington’s favorite GOP ‘moderate’ – came out categorically against the idea. As reporter and TPM alum Sahil Kapur puts it, if Bacon won’t do it probably no Republicans will.

In announcing his alliance with Freedom Caucus hardliners, Bacon went the extra step of endorsing their false claims about negotiations. “I think [the discharge petition approach is] DOA. Because the president’s got to make some compromises with Republicans. For him to say my way or the highway — no way.”

This is absurd. The President has made clear he’ll negotiate a budget. That’s how the system works. The White House, the House and the Senate have to agree on a budget for the government to function. What he has said he won’t do is negotiate over whether the House will force the United States to default on its debt obligations for the first time in almost 250 years.

The subtext of this article is that they are PISSED that they can't get around the Republican majority and just do what they want.

Now watch the Republicans burn a huge pile of political capital and get not anything substantial in return.

Personally, I would like a 20% reduction in the federal workforce and 80% reduction in grants to social organizations. That would demonstrate a responsible approach to getting spending under control.

They will settle for some window dressing compromise that leaves us on the path to doom. Count on it.

While I agree with your plan, I believe we need to go MUCH further. We’re fast approaching a point where we can’t even make the payments on our loan interest. America is insolvent.

If they would quit financing leftist organizations, such as those charities that assist illegals coming into this country, it would end up saving literally billions of dollars per year.

The real story here is not what pisses off the Democrats, but that a moderate has refused to cave to the Democrats. That’s not only abnormal, it’s shockingly refreshing to finally see. Kudos for RINO Don Bacon. Now let’s not make this a one off there Donny boy.

The President has made clear he’ll negotiate a budget.

He may "negotiate a budget", but I don't see him saying he would accept a budget.

“Now watch the Republicans burn a huge pile of political capital and get not anything substantial in return.”

For some reason, I agree with you.
That silly reason is:
The almost 60 years I spent listening to, believing and voting for Republicans got me what? Honestly, not very much.
Two presidents, one maybe two Senators and a couple of Representatives that did or tried to do what they said they would.

Sounds like 'Josh Marshall' at the "Talking Points Memo" is a complete POS...

This talking points memo guy as a first class con artist. Defaulting on debt is out of the question.

The exercise here is are we going to continue to continue to add more debt, already 6.8 times tax receipts in a fashion where Uncle Sam simply says, I need more.

If you make 100k and you owe 680k, you are in a not so good place. To say you have to keep borrowing means you have a problem.

Our government has a problem.

What is a “top moderate”. Isn’t that sort of like being the “tallest dwarf “. Ignoring the irrelevant would be a good start.

A RINO in Oklahoma? Wow.

Must be the same situation that we have here in TN. The voters are ruby red, but the state legislature and governor are RINOs. We finally got rid of RINO Senators Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander (only because they retired). Marsha Blackburn is a huge improvement, but the jury is still out on Bill Hagerty.

Now watch the Republicans burn a huge pile of political capital and get not anything substantial in return.

While they can hold investigations, control committees and other actions, they cannot get legislation through the senate and signed without cutting a deal.

I'd rather they do nothing except focus on what House powers permit.

And my representative Kustoff voted with McCarthy on every round of votes to elect him Speaker.

GOP giving in every time to the Democrats is not negotiating!

Don Bacon (R-NE) NE = Nebraska.

But it wouldn't be surprising if Oklahoma had RINOs, because they even have Democrats. 🤣

The US cannot easily default on our debt as the debt gets paid first by law, before anybody, even the military.
Most all US debt is owed to Americans. Pensions and social security make up most of that. If Congress screws that up, then a lot of them will be looking for work. Democrats or Republican.
